  • So thanks to @root I am picking up a Salsa Vaya frameset for £150 this afternoon.

Looking at choosing wheels now. I have bought a cheapish dynamo front hub from Rosebikes, thinking just a deore or deore xt rear hub, rims are what I am after advice about. Thinking Pacenti tl28 maybe as they are light enough but probably strong enough in 36h flavour and £30 each at PX. However they also have the DL31 at £20 each, bit heavier and maybe 26mm internal width is a bit much for my (initially when road touring) 35m tyres?

Also with tyres, I was looking at Rando Pro's, had good experiences with normal randos, but the pros are folding so a bit lighter and 120tpi so maybe a bit more supple, £18 each. Anything else I should be looking at in that price range?

    Cheers!

  • Cheers for the info, I actually bought a Humpert Moon bar from SJS, should give some clearance to my massive basket.... Sorry for the shit photo.

  • 1x12? Probably just a big cassette.

Looks kinda silly to be honest.

  • Where do these "randonneur" bikes live in the wild? America? I've never ever seen one.

  • Mainly on tumblr

  • Seattle/Portland mainly. There's a few in California too.

  • ha-so this. and Radavist.

  • Holland, France, Japan. Basically anywhere where there's enthusiasts, except for the UK apparently.. Except for scoble ofcourse 😊

That cause the British take on audax is to simply get a road bike that have been converted with rack and mudguard mount, and fit a 25mm tyres over the 23mm*, instead of a bicycle that's design to take rack and mudguard in the first place.

I love doing audaxes, just not on converted racing bike.

*except that Ribble, for some reason, you cannot fit a 25mm on it with the mudguard!

  • Edited my post 😉

  • Much better, thank sweetie.

  • Bike goals

  • Thanks ed. I'm not sure I agree with lots of that, but I appreciate your ongoing commitment to educating people about tyre width.

If only British cyclists were as enlightened as their American cousins!

FTFY, it's the French who started it off, right down to the compact chainset.

  • sacre bleu!

  • How about this, a 52/36 semi-compact chainset from an old bike, it wasn't a modern thing that was introduced recently;

  • So, to repeat my original question, where do you see these bikes?

  • In my workshop, getting serviced.

  • So they're prone to failure? ;)

  • Rockhopper family transport / camping machine is coming on.

Waiting on the Humpert swept bars for more upright position, black brake cable for front lever, brooks all terrain saddle and she's ready for my daughter and I to take camping.

I was also considering a stand of some sort.

  • Instead of a stand you could just take a toe strap and wrap it around a brake lever when you stop. Doesn't solve the problem if there's nothing to lean it against, but a stand would add more weight to a an already fairly porky ride. If you want a stand that would support the bike and child; don't do it.
