  • I think the hardest bit will be Downham Way

  • @Sparky winston will add braze ons for a tenner ..

  • I can see how that would be a PITA to set up. Much fiddly. Very attachment.

I really do like the rack but the design of that universal joint/bolt/hinge thing is very meh. I appreciate that they have about a billion variants to worry about, but the limited accommodation for v-brakes is very surprising. Initial impressions leave me thinking that I would have put a different shape on the connectors to the crown eyelets to offer up a bit more space. There's probably a good reason why not, but it hasn't occurred to me yet.

  • Closest thing I've ever had to a functional bike

  • Salsa Vaya? There was a chap over on YACF selling a frameset for 150.

  • Those are great pictures!

  • Hello,
I was wondering if you could bring your expertise here:
I have a Kona Honky Ink 2012 (700) with oddly placed eyelets on the rear + a 26 in Tubus Cargo that I thought would fit nicely... But the rack, as shown on the picture below is too close to the seat tube. My feet will strike the panniers for sure.
Do you think to any possibility to put the rack back, using this eyelet + a sort of adapter or sth?
    Thanks!

  • You're just fucking shit up with these pic dumps aren't you! odd bars are in!

  • Weight of the frames doesn't matter unless you're gonna do some CX style shoulder carrying every five minutes or so.

You wanna something that felt stable in the long run, don't go full rack/panniers, go half/half (bikepacking + small panniers), give you a bit of advantage and massive weight reduction while still being able to carry a lots.

Bikepacking alone removed nearly 2kg worth of panniers and rack (unladen).

  • Maybe one of these?
Between quick release mounting point and the set back of the adaptors you should have a lot more room.
A faff to remove wheel? Get better tires.

  • Thanks, I thought about these but I'm afraid my rack being for 26 inch frame (mine is 700...) it may touch the fender... (I know, it's stupid but the eyelet beeing so high on the frame I thought a 26 inches rack would fit better... not anticipating the lack of room for my feet :/)...
    But I could try.
Or use this extender on the eyelet, drilling out the hole to fit 5M bolts?

  • I just can't get on board with weight not mattering at all. Why would people be careful not to pack too much and go minimalist if it doesn't. It's difficult to put enough stress on the fact that I am always compromising, and weight is 3rd in the list after price and functionality, if I am choosing between similarly priced similarly functional bikes and one is much lighter then I will choose that one.

The main thing I have against bikepacking stuff is I don't own it yet, whereas I do own decent ortlieb panniers, which have been completely flawless for me. I see no reason to change them for anything when that means further expense, and from what I can see a bit more faff. Also they mostly seem to use velcro, which is a rip-off.

  • Okay, it's probably best to elaborate further; weight of the bicycle is not important however the weight of the luggage can make a noticeable difference to the point that you end up needing a smaller chainset go compensate.

Ortlieb are very tough but the flaw is that it's very heavy, and the mounting are not stable especially off roading compared to the old bungee core one.

Bike packing gears is a lots more reliable and durable nowadays, it was flawless on my 1 months tour on a fixed wheeler to Morocco, even Ortlieb is now making bike packing stuff.

My suggestion of mixing it is using your panniers but add a frame bag for extra capacity without increasing weight (save a huge amount of weight when you switch from those heavy Ortlieb handlebar bag to a 300g framebag).

  • Probabably something like this from Tubus:

What I normally do when looking for a suitable dohickey is look through the spares section on SJS

  • The SJS spares section holds all the answers. Like a cycling magic 8 ball.

  • I would get the set I recommended above and start experimenting, maybe it will fit. You can also use it without the quick release a la @spotter's suggestion.

  • Hi guys, I'm sure I asked this before but looking for 25.4mm bars with a sweep back and possibly some rise. Any suggestions?

  • What kind of weight are folks bikes? Once you put on racks and other shit if you've a steel frame then the weight sky rockets!

My 62cm CC has guards, Nice rack with Wald and an LX/Edelux set up that pushes 33lb.....granted it rides light but I feel strongly that it needs to shed weight

  • Thanks man, knew someone had already told me.

  • Nitto has a bunch if you want high end, but my go to is sold under a variety of names and sells for almost nothing. It's steel and probably not cromo but who cares when something is that comfortable?
Look for Hsin Lung (or Zoom), Dimension, Wald, Pyramid et cetera.
Also the shops you should try will be 'family friendly' and sell mostly crap.
