My 520 won't do anything at all. Not charging, not turning on, won't connect to laptop. Is there anything I can do?

Google hard-reset, see if that helps.

Ah, seems to be a few different hard-reset methods. Holding power and start button eventually worked. It now powers on, hopefully thats sorted it, cheers.
Now do I attempt the software update or not hmmm

On a similar note to the above, I've had an Edge 1000 for about 2 months now... has been going fine, but updated software a few weeks ago and since then has been doing odd things every now and then...
Went for an outdoor ride mid-week, and when i went to load the course i wanted to ride, it would turn itself off. Fortunately this happened at the start of the ride so didn't lose data etc. It kept on happening and eventually sorted itself out.
This morning i turned it on and the screen froze. The lap and start/stop buttons didn't do anything, so turned it off, and the screen was still on. It eventually turned off, and then when i turned it on again, the screen froze at the startup screen (where it just shows the garmin logo). Looked up how to reset it (holding the power button for 10) and it got going again and after a really quick test, seemed to record data ok.
Anyone had similar? And suggestions for preventing this?

Without even opening that link I can say it will be better than Garmin.

@eyebrows had the same thing. Hard reset seemed to fix it at the time
-
• #3334
That's the 'plug in - press power and lap / reset' one right?
-
• #3335
We just held power button for 15s or so
-
• #3337
Oh, hrm. I'd always used hard reset to mean "reset when its unresponsive", i.e. holding down power. I'd call the power/lap/reset a factory reset. But google says you're right and I'm happy to go with that.
(not /sarc, just for clarity. I've learned something) -

Glad we've cleared that up

As far as I can see, free level of RideWithGPS won't allow me to export the route for use on my Garmin. Seems I have to pay for a premium subscription if I want to do this.
Am I going to have to do the right thing and actually pay?
-
• #3340
Or use Strava own, which is actually pretty good.
-
• #3341
Right hand side, there's Export tab.
Can do TCX or GPX route or track.
-
• #3342
Under 'routes', if you select one then look on the bottom LHS, you'll see options to export. I prefer TCX, it's a GPX track with rudimentary directions baked in.
-
• #3343
I tried TCX on the Buck Blinder diy ish. I didn't like how it popped up directions at the bottom. It seemed a little unwilling to do turn by turn as well. In the end I turned off the track and just followed a coloured line. It was actually nice not to have the beeping all the time. Problem is, if I'm not paying attention I can lose the track and not know about it because there's no warning beep. Be good if you could have the 'off course' alarm sound but not have to enable TBT nav.
-
• #3344
That's what I get with a gpx file. No TBT nav, but an off course meeple if I go off course. TCX can indeed fuck off with its TBT directions. Most of the time I find it's telling me not to turn off the road I'm on onto tiny farm tracks, dirt roads and footpaths. Not exactly helpful, given that I wasn't planning to anyway.
-
• #3345
So you export a GPX course and navigate with it but with TBT turned off?
My GPX files give me TBT on 800 and 1000 if I have it enabled, which I usually do. The difference with the TCX is it pops up little notes for every cuesheet instruction as well ("Turn left toward Middlegreen Rd" or some shit).

@danstuff Sorry for delay: been a bonkers week or so. £20 seems very fair. Farringdon works for me too. Can bring it in tomorrow if you're around/still want it?
-
• #3347
No problem, it's been pretty insane at this end so I've been happy to leave it! Tomorrow should be good. Lunchtime? I'm planning to be in late and heading off early tomorrow.
-
• #3348
Don't think I've got TBT turned off. I think the GPX files I use just don't have that information. 'Distance to destination' and 'Distance to next' are always identical when I'm using routes I've downloaded, which suggest that the routes don't have any information about turns. I've used TCX files but can't recall any cuesheet information, but it's possible the TCX files I was using simply didn't have them.
-
• #3349
I export the "GPX Track" from Ridewithgps.
I have Turn by Turn OFF but Off Course Warnings ON.
That gives me a line to follow on the map and a beep if I go off course.

Sounds good. Where do you want to meet?
Mine came with one, but I promptly used the maps supplied on VeloMaps instead. They're based on OSM data, but have been rendered in a more cycling-friendly manner. I.e. they show small roads and cycleways as well as main roads at the lower zoom levels, as well as cycling-relevant POIs. They're free, and worth investigating.
