It is absolutely to do with the micro sd card missing as the basemap which is probably the only one loaded does not support just about anything.
Here is a view of the basemap of a route, notice the absolute lack of detail.

Thanks. Could the problem have anything to do with the fact that my Garmin is missing the MicroSD card that I believe it should have pre-installed?
