But if you have opted to use the SD card as extended internal storage (a marshmallow feature) it won't appear as an option since to the apps there is no external sd card, just a larger, slower, internal memory.

I opted to use the SD card as internal storage but I still have the option to move apps between the internal and external storage.
Those that are moved move everything, but some apps, including google music and plex don't have the option to move to SD so try and save everything to internal storage. It's not how I was expecting it to work when I read the descriptions initially.

What OS are you using?
I had this option in Lollipop but it's disappeared in Marshmallow so far as I can see.
