  • I checked my privilege.

I was relieved to find it was indeed excellent.

  • Well, obvs. It's fucking awesome being an educated, middle class white man.

(As long as you recognise that it ain't so awesome for those that aren't.)

  • Who are you calling educated?

  • My IT level is only a D at GCSE.

  • apologies. There I go again with the assumptions.

  • and yet you come across as so much more intelligent than our friend with an IT degree

  • True, and people can be cunts entirely separately from being deaf or on the spectrum.

  • I use spellchecker and cuntchecker, although that's a bit buggy.

  • Educated? Middle Class?

I have certainly pulled the wool over your eyes.

That was a bit flippant but yes, of course I recognise privilege. I do think you're being a little harsh on Greenhell though, he was just trying to look out for the guy a bit.

Sometimes, it's difficult getting it right all the time and people do slip up or use the wrong terminology or are clumsy in their wording etc. I had to leave a party in disgrace not so long ago because I'd dared to gender a cat.... Apparently, it's not up to me to decide.

  • Cats are male as they are all dicks.

  • Dare I ask how you gendered the cat? This may give clues as to why you had to leave.

  • It was an enormous ginger cat with a huge pair of bollocks and I asked 'what's his name?'

Apparently, it's not up to me to assign gender. Then, I had quite a long lecture about privilege, gender, sex, sexuality and transphobia.

It was not a fun end to the evening.

  • Yeah, genuine apologies - I'm making a sweeping generalisation that most people on this site are middle class (fixehs are pricey), and young, educated (mostly) males.

Generalisations are always going to have some anomalies (yeah, you heard me!)

No offence meant to @greenhell. Christ knows I've said stuff in the past (including the 'we're all on the spectrum' thing), but have since learned that it isn't acceptable. I was raised in a feminist, hardened socialist, lesbian household and work with young people with mental health and learning difficulties, and so I appreciate that I may be highly-sensitised to the language people use.

I'm also currently in the throes of completing stuff for a Psychology masters on feminist/critical psychology and masculinity, so these sort of things are at the forefront of my thinking right now.

Greenhell had good intentions, I'm sure, but unless people are told that these things aren't OK then they'll continue to do them. I would like to think greenhell appreciates that, as I know I would.

It is difficult getting it right all the time, as you say, as there is always going to be someone more 'right on' than you. It's a funny one. People using how PC they are as a stick to beat others with. Odd.

I met some amazing people growing up, but I'm not sure any of them would have got upset about you gendering their cat. Perhaps that shows how far/backwards we have come.

  • Ha, sounds like a sketch or something.

  • I'd kind of get it if it was neutered, but I reckon that cat was probably CIS. Seeing as how it's cognitive processes are limited to eating/fucking/sleeping.

  • Was it called Mr Tiddles? Bet it was a trap and you were the entertainment.

  • well you certainly sound like you know far more about this than me or most others on here - happy to take your cue on this. i stand corrected.

    #commesdefuckdown

  • No worries. I realise I came across like a dick, it was meant as a gentle nudge.

  • I'm usually pretty good on these fronts and manage not to offend anyone (and apologise and correct myself if I do) but what was particularly galling was I'd just had a full day of Gendered Intelligence Training at work.

Are we all friends again? :)

  • where's that top-arsehole lucas gotten to, THIS IS ALL HIS FAULT!

  • Ha ha, beat me to it.

This was his plan all along. It's like some fucking social engineering experiment. 5 years in the making. Well done @lucas

  • Did we win or lose? I can't tell.

  • It's fucking awesome being an educated, middle class white man.

(As long as you recognise that it ain't so awesome for those that aren't.)

As it turns out, the existence of educated white middle class men is awesome for people who are not any of those things. Obviously quite a lot of them are cunts, but I'm not even sure that cunts are disproportionately represented in their number relative to other groupings. I'm sure it's only an accident of history that white men got to be educated and middle class first, but it was that chain of events in human progress (basically the reformation, the enlightenment and the industrial revolution) which opened the floodgates for everybody else, regardless of gender or colour.
