• Hello everybody!

I'm fairly new to this forum. I've been regularly checking the forum for about a year and created an account in January but only recently I came to the conclusion that it was time to give back to the community, rather than just being a passive by-stander.

So let's do this! This is gonna be my first build thread. I noticed that quite a few people on here have a soft spot for eccentric paint jobs like fluro, pink, fadez etc. So I'll just give you a bit of all of these :)

    But first things first:
Last December I bought a Colnago Dream with an almost complete Campagnolo Record Titanium 8speed group on it. I bought it mainly for the gruppo as I'm not particularly interested in Aluminium frames. Ever since I got into road bikes (which is not even 2 years ago, mind me) I dreamed of a build where I would go all out on. So when I got the chance to buy the Colnago Dream for a reasonable price I knew I had to get it in order to put the group on a frame of my liking at some point in time.

Last week I finally found a frame which checked all the boxes for me and which is (imho) worthy of carrying the Campa Record that has been eagerly waiting in my glass cabinet. The frame is an Olmo Scatto made out of New SLX tubing. The frame is in mint condition with just one paint chip at the seat post clamp. I bought the complete bike for 425€ with a complete shimano 600 Tricolor in mint condition. Luckily, a friend of mine was looking for this exact group so we split the price and I ended up paying 270€ for the frame which seems fair to me.

I have to warn you though, the gruppo and the frame are not even at the same place right now so this will be a slow process. I would have started the thread at a later point but @MCamb asked me a question about it in the ebay-thread and i didn't want to hijack the thread with my personal projects...

So, what I have planned so far:

    • Strip the frame of its parts
    • Mount the Campagnolo Record Parts that I already have
      • maybe get a matching record seatpost at some point, until then, a campy athena will have to do
    • Put on the Campagnolo Atlanta 1996 Wheels that came with the Colnago Dream (on a side note, these have 28 spokes which makes them quite rare if I'm correct)
      • maybe get shamals at some point, but that's something for the distant future
    • Decide on tires. The Atlanta wheels are made for really narrow 19c tires but I read 23c will fit. Can anybody confirm this? I was thinking about some Vittoria gumwalls, not sure though whether this would be too classic for such an in-your-face paint scheme.
    • Decide on a saddle. I got a San Marco Laser that I could refurbish. I upholstered quite a few saddles and became quite good at it. Alternatively, I could buy a Flite Ti, always loved them but never had one on any of my bikes thus far.
    • Decide on pedals. Clipless would be period correct but I'm really used to toe clips and don't really like the idea of being dependent on bicycle shoes to ride it.
    • Decide whether i'll be using the 3ttt evol stem + 3ttt bars the bike came with or whether I should use the ITM Gocchia + bars from the Colnago Dream.
    • Decide on bar tape.
    • There's probably a few more points I haven't thought of yet.

That is it so far. I'm happy to hear your comments and input!

So without further ado (as if there hasn't been plenty ado yet) here are some photos:
Please excuse the poor quality, the pictures of the Scatto are still from the ebay auction and the photos of the parts are taken with my phone:

    Cheers

  • Wonderful color!
Fantastic frame in top nick conditions and lovely build.

Love Olmos and love the Scatto name. I'd get one just for that.
Scatto means like sprinting in action...the sprint.

  • Now that's a warm welcome right there! Cheers :)

That's interesting, I translated it on dict.cc and it translates to the german word for trigger, as in the trigger of a gun.

  • Love that Olmo!

I also have a Scatto, mine needs a bit of TLC :)

Sounds like you have big plans

  • It can also be related to the guns yeah, the "sprinting in action" of the gun mechanism that then leads to the bullet being shot.

But this is on a bike, it means it's "Scattosa", i.e. it's agile, springy, confident.

Mostly the same thing though -> it's a very nice frame.

  • Also, have a look at the Olmo thread on here:

    http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/176529/

I'm gonna add myself as an Olmo owner, hopefully, soon.

  • @anidel Seems like creating the thread already pays out. I love this kind of background information on bikes.
@MCamb Good to have a fellow Scatto owner on board, I'll make sure to post it in the 'olmo riders unite' thread once it's finished. I'm curious, it seems like there are scattos made out of different tubings. Is there actually a hierarchy among the olmo models (sintex, scatto, san remo) as it seems like they sometimes use the same tubing across different models and sometimes varying tubing for the same model...

  • Not sure I think it depends on when they make the particular frameset. It's common to re-use the model name, so it's common that same model in different years sports different specs.

  • That makes sense. Any ideas which year mine could be? Maybe the slx decal says something as there are different ones

  • Mine is Columbus Brain, not sure when it was made but I think it's mid 90s

  • Columbus SLX New is, I think, same a Colmbus PRX. It was used in the 90s, but dunno a specific range.

  • The shimano BR 6403 it came with was produced from 91-97, so should be somewhen around that time... Let's just assume it was 96 so the stickers on my wheels show the year it was build ;)

  • This looks like a nice project! 23c tyres should fit just fine.

  • I'm a sucker for flouro and fadez ... Sweet !!

  • Glad you like it! Thanks for the info, are there even any 19c tyres that are still being produced? Schwalbe's narrowest tire atm is 22c afaik...

  • Same here, fluoro FTW!

This is actually my second pink bike. My everyday beater bike is partially pink, too. It's more or less a no name frame or at least from a brand that is not renowned among bike aficionados. But the tubing is rather nice (Ishiwata 022) and I really like the geometry of the frame. Kinda sneaky how they just copied the paint scheme of a Concorde, tho. Anyway, I really enjoy cheap bikes as you don't have to worry too much when you use them. Got this one for 35€ and have since changed all parts except for the bb, crankset that I polished and the seatpost which is polished and painted to match the frame.

    Before and after pics:

The bike in the background is a peugeot recorde du monde that i build for my gf.

  • Not sure about 19c but Conti makes the GP 4000S II in 20c. I use that on my Hed 3 which is also designed for 19c tyres

  • Good to know, i'll check it out :) Thanks!

  • Clearly You have an unhealthy addiction to flouro !! Carry on sir sterling work :)

  • Thanks, i got pinkeye so to speak ;)

  • Mini update: Just bought a Flite Ti in mint condition. This raises the question: which colour should I use for the bar tape? Initially I thought I'd go for a white saddle and white bar tape. Now I'm thinking about black tape as the hoods of the brake levers are also black. Then again the frame has white pantos so maybe I should use the flite for another project and instead use the white Regal that I already have.
And what about cable guides? Maybe a black saddle and black bartape but white cable guides to match the pantos, or do you think that would look weird?

Comments are very much appreciated :)

P.s. how come the 'flite' logo on my saddle is white? It's usually yellow, isn't it?

  • There's a few different ones knocking about with slight differences
