Damn, missed that the QB even existed! Head too full of baby stuff. So does it sound good?

If you can stretch to it, the Debut Carbon Esprit SB is better value as you get the Debut carbon but the benefits of the Speed Box (£200) so you don't have to remove the platter to change between 45 and 33 rpm and an acrylic platter (£110) for only £100 more.

The only thing to consider is that there's no VTA adjustment so you are limited to what cartridges you can use with the Debut Carbon / Carbon Esprit SB. If you're sticking with Ortofon, the Bronze is all you'd ever need on there if you were thinking of upgrading.

I'm no expert, but is it worth spending a lot of money on a turntable to hook up to a cube speaker like the Naim? Would you hear any difference over an entry level Project turntable?

It's whatever makes you happy and if someone's considering the Debut Carbon then I think it's worth pointing out what good value the Esprit SB is in comparison.

I'd also hope that at the cost of the QB, it can produce a decent enough sound to allow some of the Debut Carbons quality to come through it.

Personally, I'd go down a different route with that budget though.

The reviews of the naim indicate that it is definitely worth it.

Plus the tactility of vinyl and the quality joy of the carbon.

I would also go down another route, but as per my post above, hi fi for oneself is subjective, joyful and immune to external criticism...

Ok, all advice welcome and I too hope that the QB is good enough to justify a decent turn table. I personally think it sounds ace and like the idea of a compact setup that can stream for parties, kids music, radio and then sound the nuts if I want to listen to a record.

I have no idea if it is actually good enough!

If you like Pro-ject turntables, they also make nice micro-systems. With your budget I'm sure you could mix and match to get what you want.

Ok, got my Beogram 1203 back. From the expert. Doesn't bloody work despite his claims and the new needle I bought from him is bent. Brilliant. Another 100 odd quid down the drain.
I'm giving him a phone call today but think I'm cutting my loses.
So I need a new turntable. I know nothing about turntables. I like the Braun ones but fear they may be more hard work than they are worth (like B&O stuff).
I'm after something that is European and looks nice. Sub £500. Thoughts people?

have a look on ebay for thorens, some are wood cased. they were a good turntable bitd (and still are)

I don't know much about them I'm afraid but it does look nice!

I know it's not too helpful, but can you not get a Technics 1210 to work visually. A lot of the other choices are style over substance or lack functionality. The 1210 has it's own design charm.

I'm sure it's a great deck but brand and aesthetics are all wrong.

The Linn Sondeck is a good alternative. If looks are a priority there's a wealth of choices. However if you want looks and the performance/functionality of a 1210 it's probably stretching your budget.

I can understand the aesthetics are super functional though. Not sure about the brand connotations but it's an industrial design classic on it's popularity alone. I'd compare it to the Bic Biro and AK47 in terms of success and recognition in it's field.

and the ak47 is available with a nice oiled wood finish!

Technics missing a trick there, could have done a wood version and a clear plastic one.

my sense/from what I have read the LP12 looks great but is a right faff and for 500 notes you are unlikely to get one that's sorted. The Ariston RD80 is a budget version of the LP12 that's prolly in budget, I bought one new in the mid-80s and loved it. I now have a Michell Focus One and am quite pleased with it (also in budget)

How would these compare to a modern Project turntable? I'm off to look at that Braun 400, a 500 would be better though from what I hear but I am afraid of buying anything that requires postage.

I've got an apple airport linked to the amp too so still have music but my vinyl is gathering dust. Tempted to just go to richer sounds right now and but a project carbon.
