The stainless thread insert for the cable clamping bolt has pulled out but it's working otherwise. So with no cable attached I can use the low limit screw to push the cage over to the big ring? Sounds like exactly the temporary solution I was after, thanks

sounds like youre in luck.
i just googled on my not-mobile "front derailleur as chain guard" and this pops up for example:

Plus any derailleur will work, cheap 9 speed Sora can sufficient for you.

whats broken on the mech? if cage, mount and adjuster screws are still ok you could reinstall it for safety/peace of mind and adjust the screws so they keep the chain in that position. ghetto chainguard which has been done since ages
