Which Groupset?

  • That's a very kind offer, thank you. I'll drop you a PM.

  • I'm having trouble deciding a groupset for my tourer to be. The plan is to cycle to the south of France with it, so it'll see plenty of hills I think. Bike will be fully packed, not sure how many kgs.

Do I take a triple? Or just a compact chainset with a wide cassette? Why do you often see bar end shifters on tourers instead of brifters? So many questions.

  • Bar end shifters are nice and reliable.

    Go 10 speed touring triple.

  • Compact chainset and wide cassette is fine.

Best combo is 50/34 with 10spd 11-34 and 9 speed MTB derailleur.

Give you a 1-1 ratio (34/34) for loaded tour and 50-11 for descending, riding on big/big have less stress than big/big on a triple, a lots less as you're less likely to use the 34t cog with the 50t chainring.

Having said that, I recommend the 46/34 Sora chainset that give you a nice range to ride on with the 34t as a bail-out gear.

  • Thanks both.

I'm currently looking at a nice second hand Ultegra 6700 triple groupset, but it has a 52 chainring. This means I can't use a 11-30 cassette right? Because of the capacity. What's the point of a triple if I can't even get a 1:1 ratio?

If I'm correct I can fit a 11-28 cassette max, but I'm wondering if that will be enough (not sure what terrain I'll be doing, but I don't want to be under geared).

  • What the triple ratios? 52//?

You should be able to if you have the long cage road derailleur, but can still just use an MTB derailleur to get a wide range (11-32 even).

You'll be fine, if you commute and ride a lots, then 11-28 is perfectly doable unless you're riding with front and rear panniers.

  • If you're riding fully loaded with front and rear panniers, the 52t chainring probably won't see any action except alpine descend maybe if you got good brakes.

  • What the triple ratios?

    52-39-30 I believe.

I don't really want to buy a new derailleur/cassette if I buy a whole group. Might look around a little more and so some research.

Also looking into a set of SRAM Force 10 speed shifters and compact chainset. Might buy that and an MTB derailleur (X9?) and cassette. That would work?

  • 30/28 will get you up any hill (28ish GI with big 700c tyres)

  • Can you charge di2 from any cable in the circut.

Could I unplug a read derailleur cable, plug on the junction box A and then charge from there?

    Don't see why not...

  • An MTB triple chainset might be more useable.

  • What are you getting? Am assuming it's not custom if you'll have it by next Thursday.

What will happen with the paduano?

  • I'm buying two Pretorius*, one for road, one for cross. I'll keep the Paduano as a second road bike. I was going to run two cross bikes, one for racing and one for training, but that seems like overkill and I'd rather have a second road bike.

    *insert money gun.gif here

  • will the 2nd road bike become the turbo bike?

(this is what has happened to my 2nd road bike - permanent bright orange tyre on the rear)

    custom pretorius or stock?

  • There's a way of using ultegra hydros with a 1x dinner plate mtb cassette?

  • I believe so.
Need the junction A of course.

When my battery shit itself I went through all sorts of different to try and diagnose.

  • I'm currently looking at a nice second hand Ultegra 6700 triple groupset, but it has a 52 chainring. This means I can't use a 11-30 cassette right? Because of the capacity.

Is that definitely true? You could always switch the 52t for a 50t if the RD/chain can't take the range.

  • If it helps I toured (light) with 6700 using a 11-32t with a compact crankset and a long cage (or medium - whatever they call it).

Frame compatibility effects it a but

  • I too tour on 32/34 on a moderately loaded tourer strictly in the Pyrenees, work well.

  • Is that definitely true?

Not 100% sure, I'm just going off of what I read online (from various sources, some more reputable than others).

I'm going to tour on my own, so have to bring all the gear (tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, etc, etc), so I'm aiming for at least a 1:1 ratio for my lowest gear. But I don't know anything about touring/climbing fully packed, so I'm not sure.

I just find it a little odd I have to jump trough some hoops (change rear derailleur, cassette while taking into account max capacity due to the chainrings) in order to achieve low gears. Maybe I should look into MTB chainsets after all, like @macaroon suggested. But can I use brifters in combination with those? I feel like I'm missing something, knowledge first and foremost.

  • I've run a Shimano 6700 10 speed triple chainset in the past with a 9 speed XT rear derailleur on an 11-34 cassette, giving a bottom gear of 30/34, all driven by 6700 shifters and levers. Worked nicely.

  • There's a cable pull converter that allows the cable pull road shifters to play nice with the dynasys (10 speed +) MTB mechs. And they'll take the dinner plate cassette.

  • Don't care. After the SRAM Force hydro recall farce, and now the Zipp Exploding Wheels ineptitude, Mr. SRAM and all his corporate structure can go fuck themselves. I'm out. If fitting cables means I can avoid SRAM then I'm Number 1 Cable Fanboi.
