  • I'm having trouble deciding a groupset for my tourer to be. The plan is to cycle to the south of France with it, so it'll see plenty of hills I think. Bike will be fully packed, not sure how many kgs.

Do I take a triple? Or just a compact chainset with a wide cassette? Why do you often see bar end shifters on tourers instead of brifters? So many questions.

  • Compact chainset and wide cassette is fine.

Best combo is 50/34 with 10spd 11-34 and 9 speed MTB derailleur.

Give you a 1-1 ratio (34/34) for loaded tour and 50-11 for descending, riding on big/big have less stress than big/big on a triple, a lots less as you're less likely to use the 34t cog with the 50t chainring.

Having said that, I recommend the 46/34 Sora chainset that give you a nice range to ride on with the 34t as a bail-out gear.
