Which Groupset?

  • I'm running 6700 on my road bike and have been pondering upgrades. My initial wish of eTap looks like it may not be possible due to frame comparability. Di2 isn't particularly appealing as I'd have to run it fully external.

So, looking at 6800. Will I see much improvement moving up to this from 6700? My wheels are 11sp comparable, so that won't be an issue.

    Thanks.

  • eTap is wireless, what compatibility??

6800 is a massive improvement from 6700 in everything, from shifting, braking, servicing (changing cable is piss easy) and comfort (last is preference).

  • The derailleur bulk has some limitations attached or something. There's a dram document somewhere about it.

  • ^This. The frame has a BSA68 BB, which causes issues between FD and chainset.

@edscoble thanks for this with regards to 6800. Everything I wanted to hear.

  • PS. Cheapest place to find 6800 gear set only? Don't need chainset or brakes.

    Calling @amey obviously.

  • Ribble seem to have some good prices at the mo, except for the rear mech which is a whopping £1.50 more than everywhere else

  • Di2 and get the drill out. Sorted.

But how can eTap not work due to frame compatibility? I thought the whole point of it was wireless so you don't need to worry about that shit? If it doesn't even do that then what's the point?

  • Ah, a SRAM FD in "is shit" shocker.

Is it too far outboard or something? Spacers on the BB shell?

  • TBH, it's better to buy a groupset as it work out reasonably well, as long you got the right bit (long cage, clamp on front derailleur, etc.), so going for a full 6800 is probably cheaper than mixing the part.

  • Please keep us posted. I'm looking to upgrade my partners Croix de Fer to full hydro, but she doesn't ride enough to justify anything above Tiagra. As I understand the new Tiagra doesn't work with the 4600 so I would have to by the whole groupset. I could just use the Ultegra 6800 bits that I have in my spares box instead.

  • Quoted from @andyp:

"I've been having no end of trouble setting up my eTap with a Rotor chainset. I don't think it's ever going to work. I've had to put a 3 mm spacer on the BB to move the crank out far enough that it doesn't foul the front mech, but I'm still getting excessive chain rub. This is with a BSA 68 mm wide BB shell though, so I think that's probably the main issue."

Fortunately I didn't have to find this out the expensive way.

  • Other option is simply TRP Hylex plus bar-end shifters if she's happy with the ideas (also work out a bit cheapers, it included rotors and adaptor).

  • It depend on the seat tube as well, I'm not sure what @andyp bike is (was it a Cervelo?) as some frame have the front derailleur too far out, or too far in, which can be a problem with the Shimano new front derailleur (shifting up is more like a snap rather than a light gentle action).

Perhaps the eTap front derailleur didn't allow enough adjustment for the difference in seat tube?

  • Chain rub on the inside edge? How far can you safely space out the chainset?

  • I'm not sure what @andyp bike is (was it a Cervelo?)

    How very dare you!

    It's on my Paduano.

  • I don't know for sure that I have an issue on my frame (Storck Fenomalist), but don't fancy spending a grand to find out it doesn't work.

Anyone want to loan me the eTap FD to see if it does?

  • oh wait, was that you in Rapha Brevet green kit on OKR the other day?

  • Do you have another crankset around?

  • Whereabouts are you?

  • Yes, but decision has been made. (Which needed making anyway if I'm honest). New frame time.

  • Was only half serious, but I'm South East. Hither Green.

  • I'm in Beckenham. It's sat here until next Thursday so if you want to come over and try it out then let me know.
