This thread is worse than puppy killing, it's like when people dress dogs up in silly fancy dress.

And yet you keep coming back...
You'd secretly ❤ a hybrid like this - admit it!

Mate, have a word. You ride a Brompton. Only thing uglier than a Brompton is a Moulton.

Posted in the gravel bike thread but here's probably more appropriate.
Missus has given me the go ahead to buy a sensible bike (ie gears, brakes, capable of decent road rides plus commuting and a bit of all road/gravel).
I think otp is going to be the way to go, means I get riding it now, not whenever I finish building it which'd probably be just as winter kicks in.
Currently only have 1 geared bike, a 3 speed hubbed '60s gas pipe thing. Keen to avoid derailleurs so have been looking at bikes like the Genesis Day One 20 or the Cube Travel Pro.
Cube comes with Dynamo, rack, guards etc. which is nice, though the Genesis is more 'me' if you know what I mean.
Anyone else got any suggestions? Budget...be nice to keep it under a grand.

Yeah I looked at it but didn't like it as much as the Day One and nobody got back to me about the Cube (including Cube themselves) so I've bought a Day One. Pick it up on Sunday on my way home from Bespoked.

Fair play, didn't realise it has been 2 days.
Tbf this years Smithfield isn't as nice as last years.

Hadn't seen the 2015 model, if the 2016 model looked like that there would have been no question, I'd have had it.
Day One should be good. Cable discs mean I can swap to flat bars if I want. I'll add guards straight away and see how the Blackburn front rack I have works on it, maybe get a rear.
Dynamo and lights will be added ASAP.

As far as I'm aware the 2015 was the same frame as a day one. I had a pootle up and down the road on it, felt great, so I'm sure Mrs MV will be happy.

Bikes for me, Mrs MV just gave me the permission to spend the money!

Ha, reading fail! You get the Alfine?
-
• #121
Alfine?
You mean the Day One with the Alfine IGH?
It's a Nexus this year but from what I've read the 8 speed Nexus and Alfines are pretty similar.

• #122
Ah right yeah nexus then.
The iGh on nevs Smithfield is pretty sweet, I was impressed.

I've had a (at least) 2nd hand and probably never serviced Alfine 8 and it was great, I expect a brand new Nexus 8 will at least live up to that.

The new alfines are a damned fine piece of engineering. Servicing is a breeze too. After around 5k, pop them out of the shell, dip them in 'shimano' oil, pop it back into the hub, hey presto. Done. gearing range is great too.
