Dynamo Lights

  • Hi,
what's your advices for a cheap dynamo front wheel? commuter bike, nothing fancy.

  • The seller mentioned here: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/12642222/

I got a wheel from them (already had a light) and it's great. Heavy (especially with a Schwalbe Marathon+ on it), but great for the commuting bike.

  • Yihaaa, here I go.
    Danke.

  • Apart from the obvious 'off' setting - which of the other 2 settings on the B+M CYO do? One is stand light and the other is always on or something?

  • It depends if you have CYO T or just a CYO.
For the CYO there's O, 1 and S (instructions here).
    O - off.
1 - on all the time.
S - senso. It will turn on when it thinks it's dark enough and off in the light

For the CYO T, you have a different set of three - O, S and T (instructions here). This light has two modes, night lights and daylight running lights (taglicht, DRL). In night mode the extra DRL LEDs are dim and the main beam is on full. In DRL mode, the main beam is dimmed and the extra LEDs run full blast. You can read more about the DRL mode here.
    O - off.
S - senso. It switches automatically between the daylight running light mode and full main beam according to a light sensor.
T - Taglicht. This keeps the headlight in DRL mode, even at night.

  • explained perfectly! many thanks

  • @Mike_Conway is selling some decent looking B&M lights here if anyone is on the lookout. Lumotec IQ Cyo Premium Senso+ and a Secula seatstay mount.

  • Well, starbike are returning me a new Luxos U. I will read the instructions more carefully.

Seems to me that mine got water in the front, not in the connector bit. I'm going to push a little dab of silicon grease into all the seams this time. And possibly fashion a little rubber roof for the spade connectors. Did this with my bro-in-law's cheapo one and it seems pretty cool, made of section of innertube stretched over the connector bay.

Meanwhile think I'll mount the Edelux on another bike.

  • About to pull the trigger on this front light without the dimmed headlight, any issues with it before I part with my money or is it a forum consensus winner..

  • I wouldn't get the R version, you don't get the beam cast into the distance as much, otherwise good. Premium is definitely worthwhile. I've just bought an IQ-X (not fitted yet, review to come) from Bike24 for a good price, looks to be awesome.

Edit: more info on the R version here

  • Oooh. Will keep an eye out for that review.

  • looking to get the T, which has the extra lumens, rather than the dimmed for german roads R version.

But thanks for the advice, much appreciated..

  • The T doesn't have extra lumens (that's the premium version, definitely get that), it's the Licht24 version that has some extra low power LEDs under the main light that it runs during the daytime. In senso mode (S on the switch) it will switch between the daylight 'being seen' mode and the night 'seeing the road' mode.

  • Oh well it's good that they're hooking you up! Shame the old one was past it though.

My luxos got a smashed up in a crash recently but my cycling insurance is covering it so I need to get a new one installed too.

The weatherproofing mods sound great though, would you mind posting some pics when you're done?

  • Remember my question about using the Supernova Triple under a Garmin mount?

Well after too many hours searching for an alloy GoPro adapter, getting it from aliexpress, also the RaceWare Garmin/GoPro mount I just finished filing the GoPro middle tab and all is set up

  • I've just ordered a B&M IQ Cyo Premium front and Supernova rear.

I'm thinking that as my bike currently has no cables on the top tube I might run the cable from the rear light down to the rear hub and back to the front with either the brake or gear cable. It'd add a bit of length to the cable but be a lot neater and probably keep it better protected than running it along the top tube by itself. I could drill the top tube and run it internally I guess...

  • Will that combination, B&M IQ Cyo front and Supernova E3 rear, work alright?

Someone's just mentioned in the Dynamo hub thread that the E3 might need a different type of current - ac instead of dc or vice versa - than the front light will supply.

  • I read it on here somewhere to be fair while researching my own setup.

  • Supernova rear is DC and needs a supernova front for a DC feed. All other fronts supply an AC feed to the rear.

  • Shit.

Lol. Just phoned the Rose UK guy and he reckoned his German colleagues are so efficient that the order may be on it's way already, oh well.

There's a B&M rear light I'll swap it for if not, best part is, the B&M is about 30eur less than the Supernova.

There was a nice Son tail light on the Rose site but it was more than the supernova.

  • Does the triple work ok mounted upside down? As it's an off-road light maybe it doesn't have the directional lens but the road versions would be very ineffective mounted upside down, I think it explicitly tells you not to in the manual.

  • It's non-directional lens wise so will work at any angle.

  • Be interesting to see how well sealed that cable entry is too... :/
