Having read the article after reading the comments here, it's not nearly as combustive as I was expecting. It's ok for him to think competitive cycling is tedious.
As he explains, he's in a strop because he doesn't like being characterised as less of a cyclist. In a similar way people feel like he's looking down on people who are new(er) and super serious so are in a different way less of a cyclist.
Probably nobody is looking down on anybody as less of a cyclist. And who cares if they are anyway.
