  • As a standard rider who commutes, rides up and down hills and around London and so forth, my bike with discs is an absolute revelation. I will never buy another road bike that is not equipped with discs, and I'm even looking at getting a disc fork for my fixed gear.

I can't believe the people talking about discs as if they're nothing but a marketing gimmick have ever ridden a bike equipped with them. I'm also in two minds about the opinions of the pros. Presumably they've ridden them and just don't feel the need for better braking in any/all weather?

There's a case for them on mountain descents on carbon rims in the rain. Not at Roubaix - unless its insanely muddy but then you'll have bigger problems. Strikes me as weird they even tried them there.

  • Would be great in the mud.

As for why - the team is using disc wheels in ALL their races. They had to adapt their cars and stuff to suit the new bikes so it's an all or nothing change to discs.

Commercial reasons, no doubt. Whatever their suitability for this race, it's a big showcase.
