    My aim was to draw attention to the honourable @Ratty's position that this thread's "raison d'etre" (I find the use of French here troubling) is to "[miss] the point on a rather grand scale." This, to me, is a rather bold - and dare I saw - provocative claim.

    I probably should have used quotes.

    So do I, it should be «raison d'être», as in Ratty's post. :)

    (It's actually a loan word and so, while it's derived from French, it's also technically an English word.)
