Thank you for bringing the ambiguity to my attention.
My aim was to draw attention to the honourable @Ratty's position that this thread's "raison d'etre" (I find the use of French here troubling) is to "[miss] the point on a rather grand scale." This, to me, is a rather bold - and dare I saw - provocative claim.
I probably should have used quotes.

So do I, it should be «raison d'être», as in Ratty's post. :)
(It's actually a loan word and so, while it's derived from French, it's also technically an English word.)

every poster (except the enlightened philosophers) on this thread has missed the point, or only those who have missed the point..
