Braking, I would imagine.

If it looks like a brake lever, it's probably a brake lever.

Would be a bit obvious for it to be the throttle for the bb motor!

The buttons next to the levers would be a better bet, I suspect.

If he uses it while accelerating, there's probably something wrong.
