Sweden - North of Stockholm

Posted on
  • I'm planning my Summer cycling holiday, seems like I'll be going to Sweden. I'll meet up with a friend that'll be in Gotland (but not sure if I'm going South to Gotland or if we meet in Stockholm) and ride North towards Östersund/Sundsvall. Neither of us ever rode in Sweden, any advice welcome.

In terms of route, the more scenic the better, detours not a problem. Not a race by any means, hopefully lots of camping by lakes and frequent stops to swim/drink/cook/chill.

If anyone want to suggest routes, places worth visiting or avoiding, Swedish road manners, whatever, would be most welcome. Trip is mid early July, hoping for good weather.

  • Ok, this is what I discovered up to now:

    • pine forests
    • mosquitoes
    • more pine forests

Read some reports of people changing plan mid-tour and going elsewhere (Norway) out of landscape-induced boredom. Can't be that bad, can it?

  • Gotland is beautiful but windy. Central sweden is generally quite boring, super long stretches with just trees and no towns, at least inland. Along the coast it's more scenic (both stockholm and sundsvall is located along the coast). Go west and meet up with me (200k west of sthlm) and ride on to south of Norway instead ;) Weather should hopefully be good. But swedish summers are generally really nice or horribly bad. Last year was cold and rainy and the year before that it we had like most sun hours ever recorded. Ask if there's anything else..

  • Oh thanks, I might have loads to ask in the next few days. The plan started because my friend is in Gotland but we have other friends to visit in Grotingen, hence the idea of making a slow trip up there.

I saw the other thread today about bikes in trains being a no-no, which sucks big time. We'll have 2 solos and a tandem to transport back to Stockholm, so that's one of the things that needs planning.

In terms of route, most tourists seem to take the cykelspåret, is that right? I like the fact it's easy to use, but not convinced it'll take us through nice bits.

Seems like most people that visit the area opt for Norway indeed. It's a shame it doesn't fit my plans at all, looks gorgeous on pics (and scary to do all that climbing on a loaded tandem!)
