Yeah, this 1x1 is something I threw together. Had some specific boxes I wanted ticked and actually never even gave Surlys a thought. When I got wind that the frame could easily handle 650b I started looking for one.
It's currently rolling on WTB i29 rims and 2.8" Nobby Nics that measure 69/68mm knob-knob/casing-casing. Axle is dead center in the dropouts and there just enough wiggle room to keep my mind off it. Slammed in the rear I bet a full 3.0" would work. Bb height was a concern but as soon as I got out riding I forgot about that. Feels planted, fast and sure. A real shredder.
An Inbred would also be cool but I already did that thing with the segmented front&rear forks on my Pompetamine.
Stem is a GT stem, 90's era. I got a few. Can't have too many stems.
Other bits I like are the great XT clutch rear der and MT62 cranks filed down for low q-factor so it doesn't feel like treading a plowed field.
Glad you liked it! -

Its a tout terrain, with a pinion gear box under the cranks. He's got a USB charger thing in the top of the steerer tube which I think is why it looks a bit higher. The red bag under the seat is loo roll.

42t a good range, you can easily fit a big 8 speed MTB derailleur and run 11-34t if needed.

Any recommendations for a 700x42 (or 40 perhaps) gumwall. I'm not having too much luck finding any - there's the 38c Pasela which is a bit under what I'm looking for (though not much to be fair, it would probably do), and 40c Schwalbe Road Cruiser which are super duper cheap and which is probably not such a good thing.

also, maybe this belongs in the frankenbike thread but has anyone got any midge bars? was thinking of turning a pair upside down for some high-ish rise, wide porteur stylee conversion. mainly to avoid having loads of spacers or high rise stem
-
• #11741
Is it because of the big clamp diameter that you want to use the midge?

I think every japanese cycling blog is 50% bikes and 50% food

i think they come in 25.4 as well, just not at the moment. Whether planet x have stuff in stock at any given moment seems to be pretty random

which is how it should be!

Thanks, very interesting - and the EX version too, perhaps more so due to the thicker tread. I do wonder how hardy they are though, though I'm always a fan of Panaracer stuff.

The Shiroko are the hardier, armouned touring version, still pretty light though. Probably going to use them on my Vagabond build.

If you want upright bars there are better looking, functioning and cheaper options out there.

Forget tan wall tartism and get Gravelking

Granted I've only seen one pair of mdige bars but I felt the flat bottom drop area was tiny considering they're bars for riding in the drops. So if you flip them you may end up riding on the outer curve of the drop, a bit.
They'd also rise quite abit (about 12cm). So very upright.

32c max ain't they?
Thats nice. Is it a Rohloff? With SRAM shifters? What does the other trigger do? Or are they just used as brakes? Looks a bit like there might be a Rohloff grip on the bars. Also whats going on with the bar angle. Looks a bit tilted down in the photo, could be just the photo though.
EDIT: Sorry, just realised this is not Current Projects. So probably not your bike and likely you won't know the answers to all my questions. Hopefully I'll not lose any sleep.
