I wouldn't call the distinction 'slight'.
Current usage is slipping into things like:
'He rents the flat to his brother.' (wrong)
'He rented out the flat.' (correct but clunky)He rents it from himself
He lets it to himself
He rents it to himself
? He lets it from himself ?All correct except for the last one.
Actually, in that context (where landlord and tenant is, bizarrely, the same person) there a confusing set of circumstances.
He rents it from himself
He lets it to himself
He rents it to himself
? He lets it from himself ?
