  • dont forget mudguards

  • Actually with that Surly 1x10, I notice the frame is for 26" but he's used it as a 29er in the past, and now 650b. Does anyone know how? Does the frame just allow it?

  • lol true. at least the top part.

  • I'm running 27.5x2.4" on my 1x1, and 700x42c+mudguards on my Troll (same geo, extra mounts). Frameshave stacks of clearance. 650b wheels feel good and ride well, 700 is fine for committing but a bit less stable.

  • dont forget mudguards

    *fenders

  • The scandis absolutely slay this forum for good builds. We brits should be ashamed.

I know you're just over-exaggerating but no one should feel remotely ashamed, they're just fucking bikes after all and there's tons of great builds coming from all over the planet.

You are right though, there are some great bikes up here...

    cough especially FISTA bikes cough

  • That's because they don't have any distractions such as social behaviour

There are loads of distractions but you got to actively try much harder here. Social interactions are far more limited in the sense that people are a bit more reserved and introverted. As I see it, over time, people demanding their own space turned their lives into their personal micro-prison that's hard to break out of. Self set boundaries evolved into monstrous unspoken rules. I've read more than once that you didn't have a great time here, which is a shame as most of the people I hang out with are respectful and kind-hearted. I'm a foreigner over here and it's noway near to what I've been used to in my life but was lucky enough to hook up with the right people.

or sunlight for six months of the year

This helps the bike hunt for sure. Absolutely has a direct effect on peoples behavior too.

horrible climate they have to deal with...not going to be at the mercy of wild bears in sub zero temperatures because of our poor tyre choice

Lulz. There is literally nothing more done here other than the exception of spiked tires for a few months. Shitty weather is just... shitty weather. I met 2 people that got Rohloff hubs on their bikes but they are gonna bike from Alaska to Argentina, nothing to do with the climate here. The functional hype of a bike with mudgaurds and hydros is worldwide.

are well-paid enough to spend these times obsessing over the correct components

I think this is the main reason actually, in combination with living in a region where 'style-points' & fashion matters a lot to many people.

  • My old 1x1 could take 29×1.8 no bother

  • Heh, I wasn't being entirely serious!

I also remember being in awe of old ladies riding about on Dutch-style shopping bikes with about 5 psi in the tyres with snow pelting down in sub zero temperatures whilst my own bike was specced out with studs and lobster mitts.

More generally, I found it really tough just going from being quite an introverted person in my own country to being high on the extroverted scale for Sweden, and even when going to things like fixed-gear orientated stuff people were majorly awkward. Still met some great folk (mostly Swedes who'd lived abroad for extended periods) but don't think I could handle it long-term.

Anyway, one of my favourite rides involved a dude turning up on his 650b hub-geared go anywhere with two panniers, blasting along on the tarmac trying to keep up with the skinny tyres, then busting out not just his foldable chair, flask and accessories when we took a rest, but enough furniture and coffee for everyone else on the ride. Truly epic.

  • Those old-timers, rolling along and pushing away on the same bikes year round with no special gear/clothes are the true definition of Rule #9. It makes the rest of us look so lame. In reality it demonstrates that if you really wanna do something, you basically can, no sweat and many cycle- related excuses are just a bi-product of our own laziness.

  • That 1x1 has got me spending all day speccing out a copycat build. What does a 1x1 have over an On-One Inbred? Same steel, similar looking frame. Internet reports seem to vary.

  • Does my 1x1 look anything like that? I fucking hope it does.

  • I think you may appreciate this one too

  • What does a 1x1 have over an On-One Inbred? Same steel, similar looking frame.

Is it the same steel? I don't know about 1X1, but my Inbred appeared to be made from pig iron compared to my Krampus.

A bit of heft aside I think the Inbred is the best all-rounder frame you can get. You just get so much for so little money.

  • Does it have the same clearance?

  • Unconfirmed.

1x1 clearance: "It was designed for 26˝ wheels, big tires (clearance for 2.75˝)"
Inbred (29er) clearance: "huge tyre clearance"

Re. material, Surly says "4130 CroMoly tubing of our own design, with a custom double-butted main triangle and triple-butted fork blades," while On One says: "Quality double butted DN6 4130 chromoly steel frame."

  • 26" inbred max tyre clearance is 75mm in width for 559/26" wheel. Slot dropout version can also fit some 2.2" x 27.5"s easily.

Surly 1x1 can fit 70mm even with 584/27.5" wheel.

I think they both are equal heavy and tubing is pretty much the same in substance.

In my opinion those frames can't be compared. Inbred is much more modern geometry MTB with lower standovers and longer reach. Surly 1x1 is taller non suspension corrected, more 90s mtb geo all around frame.

Inbred is nice and functional frame, from hard core trail riding to commuting. Debending on fork, size etc. Surly is more for freaky builds and for fans of more old school geo, with modern touch.

    Both nice frames

  • ^ I have a feeling it's only the older 1x1s that can fit "27.5+" (2.7" or wider) at the back without running right at the end of the track ends (might vary a little depending on tyre/rim combo...)

There's stacks of clearance in the fork though.

  • Yeah I think you're right.

Don't know much about MTB geo at all, so that's a helpful point.

  • Friend of mine is cycling Oxford to New Zealand on this...

  • What is it? Looks like a posh hybrid.

    IGH but which one?

What is the bulky bit forward of the cranks? Motor? Gear box? Nothing?

Why the excess steerer? Planning to move bars mid-trip? Seems like excess weight if not.

  • there were a few niggling issues with this that had prevented me from riding it, have been accumulating a few bits to improve and finally got round to getting it sorted.

New to me wheels, tiagra to open sport which should be reliable, 8 speed XTR cassette and 8 speed xt rapid fire from parts bin, pelago rack, some swept back bars and a 42 chainring to replace the 52. So I have 42x11 high gear now compared to 52x13... Should do alreet. Put the brooks on as well as will be doing ~70 miles tomorrow and not ridden much lately.
