  • Hi Andrew, @Greenbank suggestion of having the USB port (micro or otherwise) at the end of a cable seems like a very useful solution, especially if there was the ability to incorporate a splitter so that you could have GPS on bars and say phone or external battery plugged in as well, hidden away inside a bag. It would also mean that the box could be put fixed in a semi-permanent position and the wires could be routed along tubes in a semi-permanent way...

Whichever way you look at it this seems to be a cracking product.

  • If you designed the bike with the D1 as part of the spec then you could quite easily put it in a tube, with ports/cables elsewhere on the bike.

  • Is this some sort of subliminal Talbot sales pitch ;)

  • So, should I get one of these instead of a Sinewave?

  • What about a holes in the case to run zip ties through or a quarter-turn mount like Garmin? Could just glue one on and then it's easy on/off bars to swap bikes.

  • Is this some sort of subliminal Talbot sales pitch ;)

    Other framebuilders are available

  • Female USB(s) out of the box, kind of like Di2 chargers?

  • Not sure what you're getting at...?
It currently has two female USB-A ports. I'd worry that replacing those with female micro-USB ports would end badly as they aren't too strong. Also, cables with micro-USB at both end aren't very common, so you've got the same problem as a weatherproof connector!
Does anyone know if you need other conductors beyond the +5V and GND to charge? (ie is there feedback coming from the device being charged?)

  • They are built into the box though aren't they? I meant hang them (normal USB female) off a cable.

  • Ah yes, like @Greenbank was suggesting? That seems like the best solution that uses USB ports, and there's a lot to be said for how easy the cables are to source.

  • Ah, I missed his reply. Yeah, exactly that (though normal USB A or whatever it is rather than micro or mini)

  • It's tricky as the long distance touring market prefers items which are fixed to prevent theft. They also tend to want to charge both a phone/gps on the handlebar and a device inside the rear pannier, hence the original bottle mount idea.

However you only need an M5 hole - the fork mudguard mount for example? It's also possible to put under a stem, as the tab is long enough to pass a long cable tie through and around.

  • not all are built equal... and to be fair, if you were going to internalise something like this I know who wouldn't bat an eyelid about doing it.... My comment wasn't a dig :)

  • That makes sense. To be fair, I don't think it's so big that mounting choice will be that restricted and hippy's rule is everything will fit anywhere given a big enough hammer and enough duct tape. :)

  • It's always up for review. When I have greater capacity there may be the means to create two versions; same electronics, different case.

There's a 15% off offer going up on the website later, and for anyone that can't decide, I've always said if it doesn't work for you, you can send it back for a complete refund. I can offer that because I make them to a) work and b) continue working.

Not a single D1 returned to date. (touch wood).

    Regards, Andrew

  • Let me know when the discount is active and I'll buy one.

  • As a further update - I just picked up a Ricoh GR, and the D1 is very happy charging it, even when trundling along at a pretty slow pace.

  • Just ordered a D1, happy to support you Andrew! It's going to combined with an SP PD-8, an AXA Blueline 50 and a B&M Topline. USB will charge a cache battery and possibly Garmin / Phone etc. Primarily for a two week trip around Iceland but will hopefully last much longer!

  • Update is up. Ignore the "10th" on the form, it's live from now.

Thanks chiroshi, will be with you in about a week. Iceland is third on my list, probably going to be next year if I don't make the summer window (riding Tajikistan in May!)

    Regards, Andrew

  • Proper geeky question now.

Do you a wiring diagram or another picture with the dynamo in so I could work it out?

Also what dynamo are you using for power? (Sorry if I missed it in your review)

    Cheers

    W

  • ordered one as well :)

  • Ok so this is how I wired it, and it seems to work. Caveat - I know nothing about wiring.

  • Have just ordered a new functional bike, want to add Dynamo lighting but since I've just jizzed all my dish on the bike, I'm on a budget.

Shimano hubs any use? Will they run one of these usb headset caps (likely future addition) of do I need something fancier for that?

Quite like the velogical rim drive dynamo as well, anyone got any feedback on it?
