Last night I was working out next to someone in a muscle vest that read...
'BE THE BEST YOU, YOU CAN BE'
Struck me as a bit intense for gym bunnying.
Still I'm having...
'BE THE BEST MAMIL YOU CAN BE'
...printed

If I was in your shoes, I'd be doing a block of training to improve my 5 minute power. If you are able to do 5w/kg for 5 mins now (at a guess, I can't remember just how rediculously light you are), aim to get it to 5.5 and I bet you'd be able to stay with that group that drops you on the first climb.

4 x 4 is the workout you want.
Well I do 'A very dak place' by Sufferfest which is 5 x 4. But the idea is the same.

My trainings gone completely awol - since October I've had to break for:- heart arrhythmia, tendonitis, manflu, hamstring and house move. Managed a decent aerobic base (Feb peak) and have always done the key 4/5 x 15minutes Z4 and being more rested have tried to ensure the quality of that is really high. So despite being down on hours I'm up on power.
Still rather time constrained so instead of lots of miles I'm going to try to have 2 really high quality sessions -5x15 Z4, 6x5 Z5 and turn my 4-6hr training ride from steady state to more race pace attacking the hills.
Any spare time I'll try to fill with hour long blocks of Z3 or sweetspot. Important races aren't until August anyway

I can manage 125% FTP for 5 mins.
Plus I've lost 3kg.Thats still only 4.6 w/kg.
Really need to lose another kg and find 20w on my FTP.

My 5 minute pb is about 150% of ftp, 5.6w/kg. But hillclimb vs TT bike.
-
• #7058
I'd be very very happy with 150%. Is that something you trained specifically, or simply a strength of your profile?
-
• #7059
that is what i want to do and am trying to achieve. problem is, i just cannot do 4/5 x 5min hard efforts on a turbo. i just cannot get the power out indoors. so am trying to focus on specific efforts when outdoors. will be getting onto hill reps when weather is better

It's a reflection of him not being able to put out an equal ratio in the TT position.
See his comment hill climb bike to tt bike.

• #7061
Tougher to hold a good average on the flat too. Assuming flat TT.
-
• #7062
Not really. Only if you don't practice.
-
• #7063
my 5 min pb is nearly 140% of FTP, that was really tough though and I dont think I've come anywhere near that again.
-
• #7064
Well its more simplistic on a hill. If your Power isnt smooth. Gravity keeps the resistance on for you.
Tis something I need to Train now its dry and light out.

Just catch the lead bunch when they all stop at the next feed to get fresh pockets of gels, under-ripe bananas and maybe have their bikes looked over by the on-hand mechanics.
Or, HTFU and hit the climb first so you're not left behind.

No it doesn't, not really. My CTL is high because I do large volume.
I can then go out and smash a 25 and be flat for a couple of days.
-
• #7067
What is your ctl? What you going to take it to before transam?
-
• #7068
Yeah, for the organisers.
-
• #7069
10% higher than anyone else's.
I'm not specifically targeting a CTL value I've targeted planned workouts. End results will be CTL = 'fkn high'.
-
• #7070
Yeah but what is high for you?
I went into TCR coming down from 140ish last year.
Currently at 90 :( Dam time constraints. -
• #7071
You know the rules. If I told you I'd have to kill you.
-
• #7072
Ha I see we might be competitors.
You're off the christmas card list.
-
• #7073
Technically but I don't think I'll be troubling you given the parcours.
My aim is to finish respectably and gain some experience of multiday sleep-deprived racing to smash the shit out of TransAm.. next sodding year. :(
-
• #7074
Yeah experience counts a lot.
-
• #7075
Yep, a LOT.
Then there's the 30kg weight differential and the fact you know you can win it whereas I wanted to smash up TA and this lumpy ass mess relies too much on navigational choices.
@TTM Recenly i did a 5 min PB of about 118% of my FTP. I reckon normally i only hit around 112-115% though. I felt like i was about to die after doing the 120% effort.*
It's when i get to shorter digs, like 1min or less, where I have NOTHING. A true diesel.
Sounds like you need to re-think your life - get a job you don't give a shit about, get a divorce, and drop your kids into the adoption centre and train all day. I'm sure you will lead a more fulfilled life..!
*thinking about it, this is indicative of my FTP being too low
