  • 781 mb/sec.... Holy bananas

  • that's more like 97MB/s ... but still quite fast

  • My VPN (Private Internet Access) caps out at about 20Mbps. Any suggestions for anything faster? I'd like to at least get my broadband speed (100Mbps) consistently.

Prefer something that doesn't keep logs and whatnot but I'm not expecting unbreakable privacy. Price/speed are the main factors.

  • Has anyone got any tips for getting Mullvad and OSX (10.11.3) to cooperate? If I launch Mullvad I lose connection within minutes. Turning Mullvad off again doesn't give me a connection - I need a restart for that. I'm completely new to Macs, so a bit lost...

  • What is the connection from and to where ? I could max out 120Mbps PIA using their nodes in San Jose since I'm in SF, but obviously connecting back to London got me ~30Mbps or so.

Again this was on windows (which seems to have the best vpn connections for speed, my mac was always a bit slower)

  • So I switched to OpenVPN-Access Server (2 license is free). Speed went from ~35Mbit/s to 90Mbit/s. Massive difference.

  • Seems stable but varies between 90 and 107 (13.4MB/s)

So totally recommend Digital Ocean, but get the commercial OpenVPN server. Blows the socks off the opensource one

  • Interesting article on Wired today about Whatsapp's rollout of end-to-end encryption:
    http://www.wired.com/2016/04/forget-apple-vs-fbi-whatsapp-just-switched-encryption-billion-people/

Whatsapp now uses Open Whisper Systems' Signal protocol.

  • London -> London. On Windows

Maybe I'll experiment with some of the other ones.

  • I cant get my PIA to work anymore. Kaspersky Windows PIA conflict interwebs says.... FML... I have to do an uninstall of Kaspersky then reinstall PIA then reinstall Kaspersky.

    Meh

  • You could use another client than PIA's own. There's tunnelblick for OSX, and the native OpenVPN client for Windows.

Or move from Kaspersky. I use webroot now adays

  • Hmm yeah also PIA "london" end occasionally is on OVH (virtual host provider) in south hampton iirc (or in one time I was routed out via France!)

  • It does occasionally have me as being in Denmark. Will experiment with a few others before ditching it I guess.

  • IF you don't need it out of the country, just spin up a Ubunutu box @ Digital Ocean London, install OpenVPN-AccessServer and done.

  • I've just bought a 3 year licence

    Fuck sakes...

  • Experimenting with other connections (mainly US) I was getting about 5Mbps if that.

Looks like I'll have to look at this OpenVPN-AccessServer. If I'm understanding right then it's a matter of installing it on a cloud machine, connecting and away you go. Is the processor important or would a base configuration do?

  • Moxie was involved but is it the same?

There's still meta data to think about too.

Basically, should I continue with the lesser known, lesser used Signal or move to WhatsApp?

  • I'm probably the wrong person to ask but yeah, I would have thought metadata might still be a thing but not sure how much of a thing...

I prefer Signal but no-one uses it. Contacts that I send invites to just ignore them.

  • Stop talking to people. Suits me. :)

I got my missus onto it and a mate and a couple of other mates already had it. I disabled GChat and I've never used Facebook Mess, WhatsApp or anything. I have used Skype and MSN Messenger but not for ages.

  • Blackberry Messenger? :p

WhatsApp seems like a good option purely because everyone has it (almost) but I've just never liked the look and feel of it.

I've joined the darkside and am using iMessage now...

  • I did have a Crackberry but it was work-only so I never used its mess offering.

  • Their messenger app is available for android and iOS now but no-one uses it.

  • Didn't RIMjob go out of business with Betamax?

  • Theyre somehow still around.
