I have a friend going through this now. Also '76 as it happens and he's decided he wants a Speedmaster. You spend so long looking, and the more you look, the more inconsistencies you find regarding dating, serial numbers, case markings, minor variations, whether you want a watch which left the shop in '76, left the factory in '76 or made from parts manufactured in '76 it can drive you mad. You end up paying over the odds for a poor example of a watch because of a date association which in reality is probably only accurate to +-2 years anyway.
Comes up regularly on watch forums and the concensus is that it's a mug's game.
