Why not go for the solex carb?
-
• #27479
I never used a solex other than a phh32 which was crap, the manifold was simesed two chokes into one port, the rubber flange plates used to flap and crack making the motor run lean, parts were bad to get even back in the late 80s, i did run a dellorto dhlb 35 on a panda 30 head which was v good but flange problems were bad again but it went well with that. I think people use samco hose type flange plates now. The single solex pbic 34 was good on single port heads.
This was what i used on the blue 500, although i sold it with a stock weber down draft twin choke and the weber dcoe went with it. The nicest set up is a dellorto fzd which makes a single port head go well without being a pig.

Phh32 were improved with having the spindles replaced and the bushes that go in to the body from the spindle replaced with bearings. Found them better, well the phh35 as if I used half a fulvia carb and no need to rejet.

I had a box full of phh solex carbs, i bought from various places in the early 90s. When i got the chance to buy a panda 30 head that came with a dellorto carb i never looked at the solex carbs and they got sold or given away. The dellorto Dhlb 35 was perfect with the twin port head, they have bearings for the shaft and they work. Before the above set up i had to make up restrictor plates between the trumpets and carb body with the solex to eliminate a massive flat spot caused by chokes that were too big. It caught fire one day as the carb needle valve was no good and fuel would trickle back out of the trumpets, it spat back but luckily i stopped and blew it out before it caught the petrol line. By the time i built the blue car i knew what i was doing but never got round to finishing it. I still think the fzd is probably best for every day use. I did have a reece fish but never tried it as i didnt have the manifold for a 500.

Yeay! We are engine buddies. Mine is crammed inside a smaller box shaped box though
P80 v70 2.5tdi, seen as we are doing mftr model designations
Just done 1100 miles in two days (830 the first) solo with some bla bla car folks for company, only none of them really spoke English! So comfy though and got 53mpg overall despite having to cure tiredness with speed, a lot. -

Panda30 head, manifold and 30dgf carb are a great way to get a 20% increase in power.
The fulvia carbs seemed well mached and most had play in the spindles that affect the running of the engine. Rebuild with the bearings solved that weakness. Mine ran better with the solex than with the dell'orto or weber side draughts

Sweet, I keep looking at B6/7 S4 Avants, but I'm scared of the engine popping, probably nothing to worry about if it's been looked after but scare stories abound. Might just take the risk, YOLO etc

How's your knowledge on W115s?
I've had a sudden desire since about 7 days ago, and someone on here having one hasn't helped me stop thinking about them!!
-
• #27491
I'd love a W115.

They make more power now than they did originally. The Lotus's and ferrari's don't as they were hand built to closer tolerances.

Would love to have a chat once I have an idea what I'm going to do. Seeing as the cars haven't turned a wheel since 96 the bodies have been de dented and rusty bits repaired. Then left to decide what to do. Both cars have 150km on them before they were retired to summer cars.

Do it. B7s quite a jump up in the auxillary stuff - entertainment system etc. but essentially the same running gear as I'm sure you're aware.
When I was looking for the RS4 there were quite a few that looked good on paper in terms of care and maintenance but after a few questions over the phone I lost interest quickly. I was also after one that had been maintained by a specialist (MRC, Fontain etc) rather than an Audi main dealer as I don't have confidence that the guys servicing 2 litre diesels all day are best suited to looking after it. No offence to any Audi mechanics!

What kind of questions did you ask over the phone that put you off? Only interested as I am looking at buying a car soon and been so long I've forgotten how to do it :)

My car has literally just come back, but I need someone to change the throttle cable for me. I just don't have the time, inclination, or my parents' driveway to get my hands dirty any more. Any recommendations for this quick job?
I'm going to squirt some carb cleaner on the butterflies and the return spring in case it's that sticking, but the guy who did all the work reckoned it was the throttle cable that needed replacing. It's a bit annoying that he couldn't make time to replace it, but he's stacked for weeks apparently and work had already started on the next car by the time he noticed. It's unfortunately got worse during the 250 miles since I picked it up.
The good news is it's not leaking fuel or oil, or falling apart any more, it handles like a fucking dream, the fuelling is 1,000,000 times better, it sounds better as a result (some killer bangs and flames on overrun), I no longer have -7 degrees camber on the front...!!
He also did a power run after mapping and it's making 118 bhp at the wheels, which according to his calculations equals about 140 bhp at the fly, which is pretty fucking tame, but the throttle response is insane and it still weighs nothing.
It's even more fucking fun to drive and the guy driving the Focus RS who did the dodgiest overtake of me and 2 cars in front on an A road got a big surprise when 5 minutes down the road I caught him up having overtaken the 2 cars in front in a much more sensible place and then not had to brake for any corner.

Interesting thing public roads and male aggression.
I was heading down A24 the other day and a mini clubman? (the really big one the looks like a van) was behind me as I approached a roundabout.
When I started to pull away after and he got dropped slightly I think his rattle fell on the floor.
He proceeded to rev the buggery out of his overweight mini and take a corner so fast he had to undertake me and overtake the car in front of me to avoid collision.
Funnily enough he then took the same exit as me and upon realising my pursuit squeeled off up a country lane pissing other drivers off in the process.
From normal to douche in a micro penis.

What do you want to know? I know my one inside out.
Rust is the enemy. Drivetrains are bulletproof if looked after. Bodywork can be fixed. Trim is expensive. Parts availability is good.

Are you attending 92Forty?
Maybe! I'd like to as there can't be many '77 models out there. The car has been hibernating for a while and whilst it is now back on the road there are still a few niggles to sort before any longer trips can be attempted.
fuck yeah. lovely car...
