Is it a Geoffrey Butler?

  • Ive always loved the look of GB track frames on this forum because they are simplistic, fit for purpose and British. So I was skimming through Gumtree and came across a listing that peaked my interest. It read 'Geoffrey Butler 61cm track frame'. Fantastic, i've been looking for another project to take on and this fitted the bill! So the story goes a previous owner had it resprayed but had mentioned it was a GB to the chap I bought it from. So i did a bit of research with the photos from the listing and noticed a couple of similar characteristics the frame shared with other GB's (mainly the seat cluster). I also found out it had been advertised on this site briefly, but to no avail. So i went ahead and got her. She came with some nice parts, the icing on the cake being a near mint condition Campagnolo Record Pista headset! Beautiful! Anyway here it is...

  • I found this thread useful when dating mine.

Mines actually the bike that started the thread, I bought it off the guy who posted it up.
I think it's quite hard to check as GB bought frames before branding them up as GB.
For example despite being English threaded mines French metric dimensions with an RGF BB shell.
Any frame numbers or the like?
Oh and great buy, I love mine

  • GB often bought frames from Nigel Dean.
My GB tourer is actually a Nigel Dean made GB tourer.
I called the shop a while back and they confirmed this when I gave them the bb digits.

  • Yeah 376 stamped in the BB and the fork tube.

  • I was thinking of getting in contact with them actually.

  • Looks like a quality find, would be good to hear if GB can provide some info for you. What's the plan? Build as is or respray to the GB colours?

  • It is a lovely little frame. I think if it turns out it is a GB (fingers crossed) then ill look into getting it resprayed.

  • Im off work today and couldn't resist building the frame up. Its meant robbing the crankset and cockpit off my everyday bike but fuck it. I think she has turned out lovely! I also took her for a spin round my local outdoor track here in Cardiff, and she rides like a champ! BUT i think she is just too big for me......sob.

Also i've been in touch with George at GBC and have sent some pictures for him to cast his opinion over today hopefully.

  • The forks look right. The same style as 2 I've had in the past.

  • I think its a Davis for crown from what i can gather, ive seen similar ones on a few on the net. Ive also seen similar seat clusters too.

  • New bars and stem day! They are not really for this frame but they do look good.

No news back from GB as of yet.

  • Apparently GB are in the middle of moving premises so will take a while to get round to any identification enquiries. Im 90% certain it is a GB from comments and research etc. Anyway I have had a change of heart and because it is too big for me and I don't really have the space/need for another track frame this is up for sale (F&F) if anyone is interested. I'll post an add in the classifieds soon. PM me

  • The frame has now been sold to @georgeholmes26. Im not sure what his plans are with it, but i think it deserves a renovation if it turns out to be a GB. Enjoy mate!

  • Hello, I have bought the frame off Alex and will firstly build it up with parts I have and then if it turns out to be a GB I will get it sorted with GB decals and maybe new paint. Will get it done professionally though, something like this and then build up with campag parts. Restoration would begin in the summer but it will be build up as soon as I get it.
