Sellers spec:

Reynolds 531, frame & fork. Frame separates in two & has front and rear suspension. Dont think it's full 531, I'm sure a Moulton enthusiast would probably know which tubes are 531..

Am seriously tempted to get a fully functional go anywhere bike for weekend touring, off road shenanigans and plus occasional commutes. Also need to cut from 2 bikes to one, hence want a do anything steed.

Have managed to save some cash to make a long term investment so looking at either Surly Disc Trucker, Salsa Fargo or Trek 920. Anyone got any advice? Salsa Fargo is the most expensive and am tempted with the 920 via cycle 2 work scheme but figure a credit card purchase from LBS would work out about the same.

Any recommendations or thoughts would help!

You will never go from two bikes to one.

You think you will, but you won't.

You'll sell your two bikes, buy a do everything, then realise that it's a compromise on a dedicated road bike, and a compromise on a dedicated tourer/commuter, then you'll buy one of each and end up with three bikes, leaving the 'do everything' doing nothing instead. Then maybe buy a fixed gear pub bike, a cross bike and possibly a retro steel bike too, bringing your stable up to six.

Accept this fact now, and do everything described above anyway, because you can't help yourself

i've a brand new 62cm marooon disc trucker frameset if anyone's looking to pick one up.

Genesis Croix de Fer 30. I've got 2015 model and it's a great all rounder. If you got a spare pair of light road disc wheels it could be convincing as a road bike.

May be worth looking if you can find something second hand buy barely used on eBay from last years cycle scheme types.

Any recommendations or thoughts would help!

You can commute on pretty much anything and while its nice to have a commuter you enjoy, you don't need your commuter to be enjoyable the way a recreational bike does.

I'd seriously ask yourself the following:

• How much weekend touring are you going to do? Will you camp and why?
  
• How much off road will you do and what type of off road?
  (estimate actual hours in the saddle)
  
  

If forced, my "one bike" would be a road like bike with decent clearance and rack mounts. Then maybe two sets of wheels/tyres. But that is because I am more likely to have roads to ride on than off road and I wouldn't want a boring bike. Plus if I did have easy access to off road I'd use a car and an mtb.

Based purely on what you've said so far, I'd buy a mtb that can take a rack. I wouldn't buy a heavy tourer or an "adventure bike".

My two bikes are a dawes kingpin and a dawes clubman so one for fun and one for days out / commuting. Clubman lacks clearance for knobbly tyres + mudguards though.

All these sound and reasonable points very valid that are repeating the voices in my head re: bikes =n+1 and if I do I actually need a bike than can go off road / how much camping will actually happen.

Lastly I'm a first floor 1 bed flat so struggle for space (as well as time and expertise) to do a build.

So will have a further think. May just be trying to convince myself to buy some aspirational rather than what is necessary.

I used to just have one bike for a few years, an On-One Inbred, rigid, with a very light wheelset. I used it for XC mountain biking, bikepacking, a bit of road touring, commuting every day, and the odd road ride (although not with roadies of course, too slow). Then I built up a fixed gear roadie but preferred commuting on the Inbred so I sold it. I also got a Krampus which is a better MTB but obviously naff for commuting.

Now I am thinking a 3-bike stable something like:

1. Slow - Surly Krampus - MTB and bikepacking
   
2. Medium - Inbred - easier MTB, mixed-terrain loaded touring, commuting
   
3. Fast - Genesis CdA - road rides/road touring, bit of towpath use

We all do it.

At the moment I'm hunting for a cheap road frame with rack mounts and normal round profile tubing. The idea being i can build it up cheaply and leave it in my folks place in France. Then I have a fun modern bike to ride when I'm out there. But will also be able to attach a baby seat to it, or a rack for longer rides.

I almost never go out there.

I don't have kids.

If and when, I'm probably not going to be going cycling all day anyway.

On that note, I'm thinking a second hand ribble audax. I'm not worried about mud guards, but I need at least 28mm tyres. Thoughts?
