  • Looooooong, is the turning circle of that the same as or longer than a bus? Also double drum brakes?

  • I don't know if it's the same with spokes, but bolts and studs have the threads rolled, not cut. Particularly in the classic car world, if you buy remanufactured threaded parts they will come with cut threads and will invariably be way weaker than the original parts and prone to shearing. The reason is that a cut thread leaves the bottom of the thread as a sharp rough point which is a stress concentration and makes it prone to shearing. Rolling leaves a smoother bottom to the threads in comparison and is a lot stronger. If the threads on spokes are normally rolled on, it might be why you broke so many.

  • I don't know if it's the same with spokes, but bolts and studs have the threads rolled, not cut.

Spokes do have rolled threads, and @veLLo said he rolled them.

  • Yes, by cutting I meant cutting in length, and yes the cyclo / weldite spoke threader rolls the threads...

And yes tandem takes as much as a bus to turn.

It's not a fast machine (mad heavy / single speed until original wheel with Sturmey Archer gear hub is repaired) so double drum has been absolutely fine.
The rear drum is operated by brake lever at have bars but also a foot pedal, which gives more breaking power if needed.
If original wheel can be re instated, I may add a caliper brake as it has breaking surface (although steel rim, so probably pointless)

  • Deserves a drawing :)

  • That is just so awesome.

  • not a fast machine (mad heavy

  • Should sell the Pashley tandem I bought a month or two ago. Still no stoker in sight.

  • A case of letting the tail wag the dog?

  • Test rode tandem for RL100. Stoker seemed to enjoy it. Needs 120mm stem and new bars and levers but otherwise all good.

  • Can I see more of that foot pedal brake?

  • Looking at this tread and realising I've not properly used my tandem since 2011! Just bought a load of bits to service her and lending it to my aunt and uncle who are going to take it to the western isles.

    Tandems rule.

Yeah I re-read @veLLo's post after commenting and wasn't sure. Maybe the rolling stretched the metal a bit too much on already old spokes and simply weakened them.

  • Sure these of spokes were crap, the intention was to demonstrate that the tandem could live again / be put back together again at limited cost.
They didn't break at the threaded end though, but at the shoulder where spokes usually break in my experience.
Now I know everything's ok and functional, £18 for 36 new spokes felt like well spent money...

  • Will try upload pictures tonight

  • Ah fair enough. All the ones I've broken have gone at the threaded end!

  • Late to the party but @Miitch, I'm 6"1 and would totally race that fixed with you

  • Get the train out to Farnham and race the H10/8, get @mdcc_tester to bring his as well and we'll have a track tandem race @Miitch

  • I'm gonna sell the tandem I think. It's too nice to get ruined sat in a shed unused.

    Pashley see pic here

I popped a set of risers on the back end, but mum still can't ride it because of her medical/disability issues with her arms.

Better pics and a FS ad to come, it's sitting in Swindon, so I can happily cycle it to the train station if someone wants to come down here to meet for it. Could potentially get it to London Paddington at cost.

  • How much? Sizing on the front?

  • I'll go measure to be sure, but I'm roughly 6ft with trainers on, (riding 56/58 frames) and the front fitted me almost perfect.

Thinking an offer no greater than £250, which is what it owes me - am happy to negotiate.

  • There's a guy fixing next door's fence so measurements are +/- hammer and saw noise.

Roughly 58 square at the front. Could be 59 or 58.5 ctc on that seat tube. Rear seat tube is about 55.

Cinelli stem (looks around 100, maybe 110)
    Cinelli Giro d'Italia drops
    Shimano aero levers
    Suntour friction dt shifters
    Suntour AR triple front mech
    Stronglight triple chainset
    Suntour Cyclone M-II rear mech
    Mavic 26" wheels.

Likely you can squeeze 700c's without the mudguards. Had considered it, but it's been in the shed since the breakup with the lady (and realisation parents won't ride it). Rear has comedy risers and a regular left hand mtb lever for brake - I put nice cushy tape there, but the front still has original Benotto style stuff.

Will put back the original drops and shimano non-aero brake instead. Original drops are also Cinelli I think.

Surface rust, paint loss, lots of tape in places to protect frame from cable rub. Lots of brazed cable stops for better/indexed setup, like sti's or something.

There are some coke can shims in places, everything felt pretty secure on the test rides for a few miles back from buying it. Would need some love maybe if you want it to be beautiful.

  • I'll buy the pedals if you split.

That's kind of a joke...but I do need two pairs of matching pedals for our tandem. Either flat-flat, or flat-spd.

    Anyone got anything?
