I do something very similar to this but with oats rather than buckwheat, and chuck in some chopped dates. Win.

I got a free SIS Whey 20 gel in a wiggle delivery today, which is quite good considering they cost £1ish - better than a bag of haribo, which tend to get given to whoever is closest when i open the delivery, as i don;t like sweets.
Has anyone had one of these yet? There's quite a lot of hype about them online, and it's quite a clever idea.
I do think they may have missed a trick but making it no carb though, which sort of means it's not a complete product. But I guess that's their next product...

I use myprotein and make my own drink with maltodextrin and fructose mix.
What proportions do you use of each?
-
• #831
2:1 is the usual
-
• #832
Depends how I feel.
Experiment and see what you can absorb. I don't like too much fructose, my tummy complained. Also depends if you're having other carb sources, as to how much fructose/malto is in them.
I tend to go a little under 2:1 though. Malto:Fructose.
If you're pushing hard, less blood will go to your stomach and you'll struggle to digest a strong ratio or a larger carb:water ratio.
Experiment.

They are grim. Almost cheesy.

I've been making these date protein balls with DIY protein mix that I've put together at home but feel free to experiment around with it!
DIY Protein mix:
1/4 cup hemp powder, 1/4 pea powder, 1/4 cup chia seeds, 1/4 cup ground almonds or cashews, 5 tablespoons maca & lucuma each and maybe cocoa powder/vanilla/cinnamon.
Date+Peanut butter chocolate balls:
about 7-8 medjool dates (soaked beforehand)
3 tablespoons peanut butter
1/2 cup brown rice crispies
1 banana
cocoa powder (optional)
spoonfuls of the above protein mixBlend everything, roll into little balls and freeze for bit. Coat in melted dark chocolate after and freeze again. This last step is completely optional of course but why would you leave it out? Chocolate guys. Chocolate.

Problem with nice ride food is i eat it all before I've even got down the road, every time, without fail.

I havent had time to make my usual batch of flapjacks. I've been living on gels.
PLus its fecking Cold still here. So gels are just easier todeal With.

Fuck gels for anything other than racing
-
• #839
This. Don't race, don't have gels. I'm all about a long day in the saddle, many miles, much slowness, take in the view. Carry mixed seeds, apricot halves, water, and find a nice tea shop mid way for sarnies, cake (decent carrot/lemon drizzle if available), and a nice mug of tea.
Gels are the devils work! -

I dont mind gels at all.
That said. For the last few years I've only used the more watery iso-tonic ones. Both SiS, and High5 do them. The idea is that you dont need to drink With them. But the main thing for me, is that they are less sweet and sticky.

I always want proper food when riding in the cold like cake, bananas and flapjack etc. More comforting.

'Nice tea shop'
LOL. I get excited if I pass a petrol station With stale buns.

I usually make a batch of these flapjacks, chop them up, pack them in that foil With greased paper on one side, and freeze them. The freezing is importantant. Otherwise I'd just eat them all infront of the telly. NOt that I dont eat them frozen.
500g butter (I use low sat marge)
600g Soft brown sugar or muscovado
500g Crunchy peanut butter
300g Honey
800g Porridge oats (not jumbo oats)
600g Dried fruit, Pine Nuts, Almonds (I use dried cranberrys, chia seeds, crushed Walnuts, other seeds).Melt together all but the dry ingredients in a warm pan. Mix in dry ingrediants.
Bake 160 degrees Celsius for approx. 30mins.Succeed.

I plan my routes around tea/cake shops or good pubs, it helps living on the outskirts of the Peak District though.

whats the point of cycling if there is no cake and coffee/tea involved mid-ride?
-
• #846
I do have coffee flavoured gels.............

The cafe at the top of one of my favourate Climbs has £35 porridge.
Cant say I've tried that yet.
You used to be able to buy leavened pancakes on the Ferrys. Even on the quiet ones. Where they'd just have a pile of them, some sugar, a Thermos of coffee, and an honesty jar. They stopped all that though.
Now the best I get is current buns from petrol stations. Which are far far cheaper if you buy a big bag of 6. So I do often find myself riding around With a bag of them Down my jersey.

Add more nuts, and some currants/ raisins (and vanilla extract and cinnamon).
Packs really well when sliced too.
