It's fine, and your alternative route climbs exactly the same amount, it just does it in a less uniform way so the steepest pitch is steeper. We use that road as the middle part of our 3-stage hill climb.

I can see a bit of validity in going up the DC to see what conditions are actually like but pootling up a DC does not sound safe to me, incidentally, there were a surprising number of people who decided to completely freewheel at the end of Fridays event and watching from the footbridge above the road were going so slowly they were weaving across the lane - I know you're supposed to go deep on a 10, but keep the pedals turning till you're out of harms way people ffs!
