The only fell race I've done is the Rydal Round up in the Lake District, which is part of Ambleside Sports Day on Thursday 28th July. It follows the route of the Fairfield Horseshoe, which goes straight up a big hill, along a big ridge, then down the other side. So pretty gnarly but very difficult to get lost, and the day's events are a bit of a hoot to watch, what with grass track cycling and people wrestling in their pyjamas.

...fantastic views if the weather's behaving. Here I am frightening the locals with my orange shorts on the way up.
I was 5th over the top, 23rd at the bottom. A fit but soft Southerner getting overtaken by all the hardened Northern folk throwing themselves downhill, including @juanito striding past like a mountain goat.

Shorts are a bit long don't you think?

@nauls these are two races I might try and do, have abandoned three peaks plans for this year.

3 laps of RP done. Longest ever run at 35k. Did not enjoy.
1st lap ok, wibbled through 10k in 1h02 and happy with that (keeping HR down to 160bpm average was the plan).
2nd lap ok until half way (Pembroke Lodge) and then the legs started to hurt. Dark hill hurt even more but I ran up it (and going down Broomfield hurt a lot too)
3rd lap started ok (e.g. miserably) but I broke with 5k to go and half walked half jogged the rest.1h15 a lap (or 1h10, 1h15, 1h20 laps if I slow progressively) would do me nicely and give me a 6:25/km average that suits my 4h30 marathon target.
1h12, 1h18 and 1h30 in the end, with 7 more minutes stopped at the bike refilling hand-bottle, grabbing another gel or two or contemplating giving up (luckily I didn't).
I'm sure I'll enjoy having done it.
That is true, very true. Tapering now, no more really long runs except the day itself. I'm sure the crowd and the occasion will push me through the last 10k properly.

Was just about to ask how it went. Good resolve to keep on going. You've earnt that taper.
Might see you there on the day? -

Wouldn't chance it. Those fell runners will stick you as soon as look at you...

Reminds me of my pre-marathon training there.
I ran out from Putney, with the aim of lapping three times and getting home. Chloe met me to join for the last lap, and managed to keep me going for a short time, in the end I got a lift home from the Rhodedendrum plantation after throwing an almighty strop. -

Beautiful day. Good prep for Mondays 10k. -

Just managed to get a hill session in for the first time in forever. Hip flared up on my steady jog back but it's promising. Yoga and stretching seems to be paying off.

^ hang in there HB. Rest lots first.
Recce'd about half (if inc bits recced prev) of Dusk til Dawn run route, Cavedale to the start of the Cat n Fiddle rd Nr. Buxton. No stats no strava.
Had done Cavedale once in dark & rain in yer face last night but conditions made me come back down and camp official rather than wild.
Route has plenty very runnable bits but today was all fast walking and Nav on move practice.
Lots of pubs en route - Reckon I can hit 4 before closing time, last being Cat n Fiddle also a checkpoint) if I get a shift on come race day.
Plenty nice views...

I was chatting to one of the mums from school about it. She's done MdS and the North Pole Marathon and used to do 3 or 4 laps of RP every day as her training. Ugh.

I'm trying to do more running, but suffering with sore hips. It's both the same, so at least its balanced! I'm not running very often, but when I do I'll do 10k or so as I'm feeling fit enough.... The hip soreness comes on after a few ks and then stays but doesn't tend to get too much worse.
Am I trying to do too much too soon or might new shoes help??? Or maybe just the fault of my advanced years (50+) .... -

Cracking view that, looks like you could run off the edge.
I fancy something like that but I think my brother has been sucked in by the BBC show about the Man V Horse marathon. Has anyone done it?

CV wise you may be fit enough but it sounds like you haven't quite got the strength in the hips yet. It shouldn't take too long to get it tho. I'd reduce the distance of the runs to 5 or less km then build up to 10k over a few weeks at 2-3 runs per week.

Thanks.... I'll follow your advice and see how it goes....

@rhb yes and that means I've time to sit writing here. Two days failure of the ferry means they should rename 'liberation' 'incarceration' I reckon. Okay let's commission a ferry that can only operate half the time. Epic fail Condor. ..
Running.
Came 29/72 over the 4 dayer.
Last one the ten k was still plenty of bitch ass Storm Katie about, 5 k split was 20.30 but headwind kicked me back to 43 min finish. Amazing to get dry runs over a mental weekends weather, with a load of bike miles and plenty sauna time between still has to recommended as a great weekends running.
Now let me get back I missed first trail running Tuesdays tonight you muppets -

Calm down dear.
Brother and I did our first half marathon at the weekend and now we are looking for a new event. I'm keen on a fell run that isn't too gnarly for beginners, has anyone got any ideas for one in summer? June/july time would be perfect.
