  • Any cheap chaincatchers for a triple band-on derailleur bike? (105 front 9 Speed deore at rear)

    Not sure a deda dog will work.

    It's a touring bike and in theory on a good setups chains stay put, in practice on a steep bonnie Scotland hill the chain came off the granny ring.

  • A long shot but anyone need to get rid of or have some spare look keo cleats knocking around that I can buy off them? Would need them tomorrow asap please. Can pay in beer or vegan cookies or hard cash

    Or recommend me a shop that could have them in London, north of the river ideally.

  • I've been tempting the gods by carrying some cash and hoping I would p*nct*r* near a bikeshop if it ever had to happen. But lately I've been riding off-road more, far away from any kind of tube-selling place. So I guess I have to start carrying my own supplies.

    What is recommended? Patch kit or a new tube? CO2 or mini pump? Which one? As cheap as possible, please.

  • A new tube is a guaranteed repair, but I carry patches too. I have a mini pump because I know I only need to get to a bike shop to top off. Also useful to be able to put some air in to find the puncture. I'd carry CO2 and mini pump if I was in the middle of nowhere, unless I was confident the pump would get the pressure I need.

    As for which, I have a lezyne and a Zefal HPX. Some of my bikes have mounts for the frame pump, but the lezyne lives in my saddle bag. Watch out for removable valve cores, the lezyne can unscrew them!

  • You can run out of CO2 cannisters, you can't run out of air from a mini-pump.

  • So I've just bought this endearingly lurid Trek 2500 alpha f+f for a tenner with the idea of making a rancid beater from the spares box.
    I'm a bit baffled by the downtube - no braze-ons, just two holes, not even threaded. Anyone know what the deal is with this? Can I fit cable adjusters? From the marks on the frame it looks like someone's run cable adjusters or down tube shifters on it before.
    Wanted some gears for the Swansea hills but may have to run fixed if there's not an easy fix...
    Any ideas?

    • patch kits
    • small pump (Topeak Race Rocket is my recommendation).
    • (optional) tyres levers if the tyres is tricky to removed.
  • I've got a couple of 1" threaded forks that need thread extending but don't want to pay lbs £20 a fork to do so.

    A mate has access to a well kitted out engineering workshop with a range of dies.

    Can anyone tell me the thread spec for a regular threaded inch fork?

    1"x 24tpi BSC. Most general engineering shops won't have BSC taps and dies, so you're probably going to have to pay for the die anyway.

    No, BSC threads have a 60 degree flank. You can get away with single-pointing them on a lathe with ISO tooling, but getting a complete fork in the chuck would be a challenge.

  • There was a thin threaded rod in there that the shifters or the cable stops bolted to. The thread used to strip, and Trek used to supply a repair kit, but that was a long time ago.
    If you are using STIs you could fashion something with some threaded rod, unless your Trek dealer has a repair kit knocking about.

  • Thanks adroit. Sounds as rare as rocking-horse shit. I think it will have to be single speed.. ...Unless I can find someone to make an extremely fat clamp-on cable stop!
