Acrylic doesn't shatter which was a consideration with the Omega moon watch as crystal debris inside a spaceship would be a problem. Rolex stuck with acrylic for similar reasons but once the watches became more of a luxury item owners didn't want the faces to get scratched so easily.
I prefer crystal because it doesn't scratch but the earlier acrylic Rolex had a lovely side profile which is completely lost with the new super case making it even worse. It is more expensive to produce though.
