  • Left pedal - left thread.
    Right pedal - right thread.
That's the kind of stupid weird thing that sticks in our oversized brainboxes

  • Left pedal - left thread.
    Right pedal - right thread

That's the kind of thing which obviously hasn't stuck in @skydancer ' brainbox. It will be just his luck if he remembers left>left & right>right but forgets that it's pedals and tries to apply it to BB cups :-)

  • I was going to comment on how BB threads are the reverse, but it was never going to end well! Fortunately, the hollowtech bearings have convenient arrows for us nincompoops ;)

  • I just push on the wrench till things tighten or loosen up. Often both happens, in that order.

  • Gold! I'll get on this Asap. Cheers maatje

  • @TM 's method works as long as you have the your hand above the pedal spindle

Which I always do for additional power from my body weight.

Despite our oversized brains some of us are wired in ways that give us special powers. Mines dyslexia which is why I struggle to remember certain things

  • New bottom bracket time and hoping for a little help. I've currently got a 105 5700 groupset with 6700 BB. Can I use either a 5800 or 6800 BB with the 5700 cranks? Thanks in advance fine people of Lufguss.

  • Yes, it also come with a shim for the existing tools.

  • With pedals I always remember when the bike's the right way up, to undo the handle of the spanner should be pointing towards the back wheel. When the bike's upside down, to undo the handle of the spanner should be pointing towards the front wheel. Given that you're pushing down on the spanner not pulling up of course.

  • If it's any consideration, I put this up in my workshop as I occasionally have trouble knowing which direction to go (on top of not always remembering left\right).

  • Cheers Ed. Pictures work for me too.,columns don't

  • There's a simple poem to help you remember.

When tightening stuff that's on your bike,
Three simple rules must ye abide.
Take your time and you will have,
Much more time your bike to ride.

    Bottom brackets, they're not hard,
Fitting them can be a breeze.
Turn the cup towards the front,
To tighten them with utmost ease.

    Undoing them's another thing,
Backwards shall ye turn the cup.
Unless of course your frame's Italian,
In which case you should just give up.

  • I'll be traveling up to Yorkshire from Bournemouth on Saturday. I've done this journey before, stopping twice. This time I'll have 2 young children and so would like to plan to stop at least 3 times. Can anyone suggest anywhere nice to and kid-friendly to relax at for a while? Pub gardens, nice picnic areas, etc

    Approx. route:
    Bournemouth > (A34) Newbury > Oxford > (M40)Birmingham > (M6) Stoke-on-Trent > Preston > (A59) Settle

  • Undoing them's another thing,
Backwards shall ye turn the cup.
Unless of course your frame's Italian,
In which case you should just give up.

If your frame is Italian, the BB cup will undo itself.

  • Rear view mirror in Mrs 'Nidles car fell off yesterday. Ordered 20 35mm square bits from Amazon Prime for ~£9 which will be delivered today. PM me with an address and I will happily post you one?

  • Helicoil on stripped mudguard eyelet an option?. Thoughts?

  • Trentham Gardens - the shopping village and garden centre, not the formal gardens. About 2 miles off the M6 just south of Stoke, loads of free parking, wide range of food, child friendly etc. It will probably be busy over Easter weekend, but far better than any M6 service station.

  • Perfect, thank you!

  • Depends on the eyelet and frame material. If you've got clearance on the other side I'd drill out to clear whatever size screw you're using then put a longer one in with a nut and washer on the back. Or just drill and tap to M6 instead of M5.

  • Tap it biggee and use a bigger bolt.

  • @hiraethus it's a steel frame, and right now there's a bolt going through and a nut to counter it. But it takes away my bottom gear, and I set the limiter accordingly.

Drilling out a size up would mean to drill the rack probably, too :(
It's a sturdy one, using it to carry my 2yo on the back with a yepp mini.

  • Use a countersink screw from the sprocket side , countersink the hole to suit, this will give clearance for you bottom gear.

  • not a bad idea at all. What's the drawback? cannot be opened up one size up in the future after?

  • You have to drop the wheel out to remove/tighten it. You aren't using the thread in the boss anymore so you can always tap it bigger later if you want.
