  • Pudding Lane is good but no need to go there. I forgot how you cross busy Romford Road into Forest Road.

  • Maybe too late, but my personal preference is to train to Slough and go from there. Two nice routes - either start off south through Eton - then Henley>Goring>Wallingford>Stadhampton

Or - go North via Marlowe > Christmas Common (which is a really lovely climb and descent) > Watlington.

I do plenty of riding to/from/around Oxford so let me know if any more ideas needed...

  • Have done this one a couple of times, was quite pleasant once you're out of Staines

  • I'm planning a ride in September and looking for some advice. The plan is to ride from Leeds (where I live) to Newcastle or Hull and get a ferry over to the Hook of Holland, then ride to Amsterdam and have a day or two of touristy stuff and a day or two of cycling. Does anyone have any recommendations of nice routes between Leeds and Newcastle or nice routes around Amsterdam? Ideally looking to ride about 70/ 80 miles per day.

  • Anyone got a suggestion beyond ridewithgps? It seems SO buggy now-a-days.

  • For online route mapping.

  • It's been OK for me. What problems are you having?

More Audax focused (as it gives a better choice of routing algorithms).

  • Works fine on shorter route in UK.
But when trying to plot longer routes between 2 set points it keeps throwing wobblies.

Thanks @Greenbank will try that and see. No elevation given?

  • I use GPSies.com, but my needs are very basic so don't know if it'll tick the right boxes.

  • Strava. Seriously, it's easily the best route planner I've used.

  • Thanks @Greenbank will try that and see. No elevation given?

Indeed, must remember to ask him why.

  • Really, it crashed on me.
    I'll give it another go.

  • I also use http://www.bikehike.co.uk as it has OS maps on there (and elevation).

It's not as easy to change routes there though, no dragging sections to reroute.

  • Yeah no good then, I make a route then drag around to compare.

That other one looks good, but with no elevation it's useless.

Strava doesn't seem to like long sections.

I'll go back to rwgps and bare with it. I am trying to plot 500 miles route tbh.

  • Hi Guys, could somebody recommend a nice loop from east London/Hackney? Don't really like the idea of taking the bike on the train/bus first.
looking for some nice country roads with little traffic, whole loop around 100km. Thanks!

  • Thinking of riding west in summer to get to a festival nr Cheddar. Have done a quick route but anyone recommend the best route avoiding busy roads?

I will be setting off from Reading station and riding towards the Mendips, finishing in Cheddar and staying at the youth hostel there, then head to the festival the next day.

  • Has anyone got a good route from London to Cardiff? It's for a night ride so I'll probably end up smashing it along A roads most of the way but I might be persuaded to detour if there's a nice (read: flat) route. Can't recall how lumpy the Severn Across route was..

  • Just answered my own question by searching RWGPS:

Any suggestions on which might be better for a quicker ride?

  • Cross-posting from generic touring thread:

Looking into doing a North - South of France ride this summer. Did LEJOG last year, averaging 90 miles a day, want to do this a bit more gently, got a few friends joining who are not the strongest so probably aiming for ~ 70 miles per day... Planning LEJOG was easy as I knew from looking at a map the bits I wanted to ride through (Exmoor/Mendips/Peaks/Lakes etc) and the bits I wanted to avoid (the midlands). Looking at a map of France I realise I actually have no idea about French geography/best bits to aim for/bits to avoid.

    Current ideas are

Le Harve - Loire Valley - Bordeaux region - west coast path to Biarritz
Le Harve - Sencerre - Beaujolai - Rhone Valley path - Ventoux - south coast

Basically, I have no idea whatsoever re bits to hit in the north, and then whether the West Coast is worth sticking to (worried it might be quite 'samey' with forests/dunes) or coming down through central france hitting the east/Via Rhona etc...

Any advice/route suggestions/recommended places to check out massively appreciated.

    Cheers

  • Heading down to Cornwall, staying in Millbrook, this weekend, anyone got a nice 100km route around that way?

  • does anyone have the .gxp files for the islington cc evening rides? or a nice c.30 mile north London ride?

  • North London to Luton, round trip, Sunday morning. Anyone got any route?
