If I want to run Shimano 10 speed road shifters (105 5700) with a bjg MTB 11-34 cassette, am I right in thinking I can do this fine but I need an MTB rear mech?
You can't use a 10-speed Shimano MTB RD with 10-speed Shimano road shifters. This is why SRAM wins. @edscoble will probably know whether 10-speed road shifters play nicely with 9-speed MTB RDs, I think they probably should as the cable pull ratios were the same back then.
