£200 for the frame, a 1/4 of what you paid for the rest
what size is the frame?

Hi everyone,
Tentatively thinking of selling my campy 10 speed centaur groupset. Not got much of an idea of what it is worth. It is the version with alloy cranks. I have changed the shifters to the record 10 speed ones which have the multishift functionality. Condition is generally good. Some scratching on Crank arms.
Any help in valuing would be appreciated. Would I be better parting it out?
-
• #1807
You'd probably get more if parting out - because generally the price is lowered if sold as one big groupo. However you may be left over with odd parts that you can't shift

Dear forum members,
I have recently inherited two (high-end) vintage road bikes from my grandfather and have yet to receive an accurate appraisal on the bikes, which is why I hope to be receiving some pointers from the experienced veterans in this particular forum.
The first of the road bikes has been gone over mechanically and is ready for sale, while the other is being looked over mechanically and will be put up for sale shortly.
Here's the data for the first:
1983 Eddy Merckx Professional Aero with complete 50th Anniversary Group (#2063)
Please view the over 100 full-sized HD pictures that can be found here:
Frame size: 51 cm (c-c)
Top tube: 52,5 cm (c-c)
Head tube: 10 cm
Stem size: 11 cm (c-c)Frame color: red (with a mix of purple)
Tubing: Columbus SL steel (custom)This is a custom order Eddy Merckx Professional Aero with a complete 50th Anniversary Group, save the down-tube shifters which were originally replaced because the ICS type are more ergonomic. The bike has been family-owned (one owner) since new and seen little use.
Following parts are guaranteed NOS:
- NOS Mavic S.S.C. Rims (front and rear, with original decals) with NOS 50th Anniversary Hubs (front and rear) and NOS 50th Anniversary quick release skewers (front and rear). The tubular tires have NOT been glued to allow the new owner to mount another pair of his liking if he so chooses.
- NOS 50th Anniversary toe clips
- NOS Regina Oro Freewheel, 6 Speed
- NOS Sachs Oro Chain
The bike was ridden using a pair of Mavic GP4 Rims with Campagnolo Hubs and Christophe toe clips, which is why the parts listed above are all new / NOS and have just been mounted recently for this particular sale.
As mentioned above, the bicycle features a custom order aero frame, featuring all-internal cable routing for the brakes and gears and custom metallic paint that fades into the chrome of the rear stays. Underneath the paintwork the frame is fully chromed. The paintwork ist 100% original with not one single touch-up or restoration having been undertaken on the whole frame. There are absolutely no dents, rust, pickles in the chrome, etc. of any kind on the frame. All the tiny little knicks of time have been protocolled extensively in the over 100 HD pictures.
All parts are guaranteed original and have not been replaced / modified. These include:
- original pair of hoods
- original bar tape and bar ends
- original Alfredo Binda toe straps
- original Selle San Marco Rolls saddle (date code: 1983)
- original 3TTT stem and Competizione handlebars
- original T.A. bottle cage
- original ergonomic, chrome-plated ICS modified Campagnolo Super Record Shifters with leather inlays
- original decals
The bicycle has been mechanically inspected and serviced by the kind and incredibly knowledgeable guys over at Cicli Scampi Zürich. They house an indescribable collection of vintage bikes and parts. Check out their webpage and online-store for some absolute masterpieces at:
http://www.scampi-cicli.com/index.html
The NOS parts were recently mounted for the first time. The drivetrain received fresh lube and the gears and brakes were adjusted accordingly. The bicycle is fully serviced and ready to use as-is.
The frame and group set show very very little blemishes and wear, which have been protocolled in-depth in over 100 full-size HD pictures that I have taken and can be viewed here:I hope the pictures suffice. I have tried to show-case all blemishes and to take a picture from every possible angle. Further pictures can be requested.
What would be an adequate price for this road bike? I am looking to get a more accurate quote than I have received thus far.
Thank you for your time, interest and efforts!

I was reading on another site that you had it valued at Cicli Scampi, what did they quote you?
-
• #1815
That is absolutely correct, but what the guys quoted me is irrelevant for an international market and I'll tell you why...
1) they've only sold parts internationally, and usually received a significant amount more by selling to an international audience than they would have by simply selling to people in Switzerland (with a Population of only 8 million people and significantly fewer bike enthusiasts and collectors ;) )
2) that being said, they said it's hard to get a proper appraisal as it is, as the bike is custom and they've never even seen an early Merckx Professional with Aero frame before... perhaps somebody else on the planet has, though? That's my reason for asking. I haven't been able to find one picture of an Eddy Merckx with all internal routing for brakes and gears for reference purposes.
3) the price they quoted me was more for the Swiss market, which is also irrelevant as it'll never sell locally. Why you might ask? The Magni / ICS-modified parts pop up quite frequently here in Switzerland (quite frequently being a few times a year). Given that they are labeled als ultra-rare by many and command a high price internationally (which they don't here in Switzerland), one can't really adequately compare markets. The target audience here is much too small and values different standards and goods.
4) the Swiss market commands very high prices for your average run-of-the-mill bike, but people don't collect bikes here that much (except for a few gentlemen). Bicycles theft is also quite frequent.
5) taking all of the above and many more into consideration, I'm asking an international and perhaps even more experienced audience as to their input :)
6) the rough figure was north of 3.5K, which doesn't mean much. it is just like going to the doctor. you always want a second opinion just to make sure :P

If it's any help this was on here not long ago
https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/280904/
I know it's not the same frame, but it is the same era and groupset. I know it went on to eBay, but don't know if it ended up getting sold or not? But it seems it is similarly priced as your appraisal, but wonder how easy it is to sell bikes in that price range?
I do love the internal gear cabling. Interesting to hear that bike theft is a a big issue in Switzerland.

That is definitely a helpful link. Thank you very much! :)
That is one gorgeous bike!
There are definitely differences between the bikes, with his having been repainted and featuring a lower class bottom bracket and rims that are not period correct.I don't know if it ever sold, either and I doubt it's very easy to sell bikes in that price range.
The paint that fades into the chrome on the rear stays and the internal brake routing is a definite highlight. I wonder how it was managed in the region of the bottom bracket. If you review the HD pictures in the album here: http://imgur.com/a/34H0y
you can clearly see how to cable for the front derailleur exits the frame above the bottom bracket lug. It somehow needed to be re-routed in and or around the bottom bracket but I don't understand how as of yet.Bike theft is a huge issue here as the used bike market is a blooming business. Crime is not as uncommon here as one would like to believe, especially when it comes to bikes .. sadly :/
Thanks again for the valuable input !

Another question.
Selling a set of 10 speed zipp 303 wheels on behalf of a friend. Any idea what they would be worth? Front is in good condition, rear has a small crack in the braking surface. Perhaps better just selling the front wheel?

Harry Quinn 653 - 58cm with a damage shown in photos. front wheel with original forks hits the bottom tube. i used an old road curved 27" fork and it took a 700c with loads of clearance. i have a headset that i will put in. can include a bb, seatpost, stem and saddle. how much am i looking to get?

Looking to make space for new bike - would like to sell my faithful Planet X SL Pro. Think it's from around 2008, maybe?
Size 58, full DA7800 groupset - though currently it's got an Ultegra 6700 compact crank, that could be swapped back to the 7800 standard.
Front wheel is a shimano RS80, rear is a velocity A23 laced to an RS80 hub.
Carbon bars, carbon seatpost.
Everything is in pretty fantastic order, but there's scratches and wear, as you'd expect from a bike a few years old.
Whaddya reckon, forum hivemind?
Any idea on the value of my 2007 Bianchi Pista frame/fork/headset?
I got rid of the crap unicrown fork and it now has a VERY light bonded aluminum/steel steerer tube Vitus fork (5-600g). Nice thing about the fork is that it rides like a steel fork and not super harsh.
It's now threaded with an Ofmega headset.
The bike is in awesome shape. I had all of the decals removed with stripper and the frame looks almost brand new. It has one tiny top tube dent that's hard to see in pictures...but I would consider it light.
Here is pictures of the frame built up...
Clearance with 28mm Conti's (you could drive a train through the gap on the old unicorn fork)
Frame/fork (don't have the headset installed in these pics)
