  • Does anyone know how much it costs Oakley to research and develop their frames and lenses? Surely it's quite labour intensive and takes time to do this... this then has to be passed on to the consumer... they're not exactly £10 shades bought from Southend market and I'm guessing the lenses aren't made by kids in India... a bit like Rapha, but not made in China... I might be wrong here... I'm starting to waffle!

  • $22m in 2006, when they were last publically traded.

    Compared to $762m sales.

Operating costs in total were $343m - $206m being marketing.

Cost of goods sold was $349m.

tl;dr 3% of what is sold covers R&D.

    Pricey materials, heavily marketed.

  • They're part of a near monopoly, so they can effectively dictate the retail pricing. I think Oakley glasses are decent but there's obviously a huge mark up and there's nothing you can do about it.
