PC PSU converts wall-socket 230v AC to internal-bus 12v DC? So therefore a 12v case fan will work from a car electrical system? I know almost nothing about this btw.

Yep, you'd be overvolting the fan a bit given the voltage from the alternator will usually be between 13.8v and 14.4v, but it should be fine. I've used PC CPU fans before for cooling regulators on bike engines. Worked nicely.
