Lugless Peugeots from the same period used a similar system, but without the external fillets. They sold it as a benefit for customers, but I think it was mostly a benefit for Peugeot to use what were essentially solder-ring fittings instead of brazing rods, I bet they saved a bunch of money by making automation simpler.
