Sadly the trend is more towards "fire brigade" policing. Everyone sits in the nick doing the paperwork from the previous jobs then rush out to the next job. Arrest is a last resort and policing by appointment is very popular and then of course there's the "station cats" or "Olympic Torches" - PCSOs. In my experience they are pointless yet other colleagues say they do a good job.
