Because 45 degree stems that don't look like shit are hard to come by, and I like tig welded tubes. But also I'm confused why custom stems always seem to be £150+ when they're reasonably simple items.

You're confused about how simple they are. In terms of parts count, fitting and assembly and finishing, a stem is about as much work as fork

That is somewhat surprising. Still odd that there's nothing out there mass-produced, compared to the stacks of steel forks
