  • How do frame builders make enough to survive?

Just pondering this - if you built 25 frames per year and charged £2000 per frame then that's only £50,000 - not even taking into account tooling and materials cost, running a business, rent etc. let alone time taken on each frame.

How is it possible? Or am I missing something?

  • Build more than 25 frames a year

  • They make more than 25 per year? That's the only variable there you have.
Also consider add on sales, OEM deals, etc that some frame makers have to add a few extra $$ on top of each sale.

  • How do frame builders make enough to survive?

In some senses, they don't - there were 10 times as many UK framebuilders when I was a boy than there are now.

One way is to attach your frame building operation to a shop, so that there are other revenue streams. Another is to build more than one frame every fortnight. The third is to have very low costs, building in your shed and taking a low wage. I'm sure there are examples of all three currently.

  • I could live like a king on £50,000 per year.

  • 25 full builds, 50+ repairs, 250+ bike fits, 100+ bottle cage holes drilled, other random stuff.
