• Maybe you're too fat? ;) My 808 on an old style Powertap has done a LOT of miles and is still going strong. I've never replaced bearings in it. I have replaced bearings in an even older hub (the non ANT+ variety) twice I think but that wheel was my commuter/winter bike wheel so has seen -much- harsher riding conditions than my race wheel.

I had issues when I chose to upgrade another Powertap wheel to wireless from wired - that was Paligap's fault and they acknowledged and replaced two or three units under warranty because they'd had a run of someone not sealing them properly after the upgrade. One of these was bought stupid cheap from the US, lasted one season and died, but I knew that was a risk - it had a crack in the carbon. Even with the out-of-warranty torque tube it was cheaper than buying a Stages or new Powertap.

With Powertap's now much cheaper I've moved on to the G3 style hubs which are a neater/lighter solution. I've had one Paligap warranty replacement of these style but again it was on a wheel I bought used and I'd done a lot of miles on it so no telling where the issue arose.

I run third-party freehub bodies on my wheels so the cheesey freehub thing also isn't an issue for me.

P2M on the winter bike/commuter I've done one battery swap on. I'll be buying another P2M new in the near future.

  • Maybe you don't put out enough watts? :)

So you've replaced 4 powertaps and you have to run aftermarket free hub bodies, so the product is flawed from the start. Sounds great :)

  • In my experience Powertaps are about as robust as a FabergĂ© egg

  • No, I wanted to convert a wired one to wireless - I paid them for the upgrade. Paligap did this and then had to replace it once (maybe twice? I can't recall now) more because they'd not sealed it properly. Warranty job for them because it was their fault.

The stupid cheap one I bought from the US was damaged so it was a risk but I got a year out of it before it died and then had to replace its guts too. This replacement I paid for (still cheaper than Stages) wasn't sealed properly, again Paligap fault and warranty - replaced for nothing.

I don't -have- to run aftermarket freehub bodies. I do so on two of my five (current) PT hubs.

My data is decent and I've spent less on them than your collection retails at so yeah, pretty good.

I'm still not buying a Stages.
