Knee Pain

  • Unless you don't indulge in that sort of thing because you're head of canteen/mess...

  • Sounds like a bit of insider knowledge there! We couldn't get away with anything like that nowadays, but in the past?.......

  • I have a pal who was in your game years ago.

Playing cards/snooker/pool/table tennis with him cost me a fortune.

  • I could still probably take some dough off you at darts!

  • Can anyone recommend a good Knee Dr / physio I have finally admitted my left knee is Knackered, im heading back to UK in April would like to get it looked at.

  • Thanks will give him a PM

  • I got pain in the front, lower right of my knee after a weekend of cycling. First time I have had this type of pain. Today it has virtually all gone, yesterday I was hobbling down stairs etc.

I've been doing about 150 miles/week for the last 6 weeks. Worth noting the 150 miles was a reasonable step up, the previous 6 weeks to that was more like 80 miles/week.

Last week I did 155, but the difference was that it was 100 over the weekend whereas previously id either done a long ride with a rest day after or made up of smaller rides back to back.

Thirdly around 3 weeks ago I took my seatpost out to deep clean the bike, so possibly could be a few mm out? think im quite picky. Hoping its that, but any suggestions welcome. Im off to Alicante in 2 weeks..

  • You guys who have had arthroscopies (keyhole surgery), how long did it take before you were up on your feet and walking around? I'm having a cartilage trim this Thursday and got a job interview a week on Friday which may involve a bit of walking. I've let them know I might be on sticks!

  • Generally best to plan on a couple of days being housebound post op.

I have had them done on both knees.

  • I've figured for 3 days housebound being off my tits on codeine etc, then start working down the painkiller doses. I seem to remember from last time I could mostly use the knee after a week, but it was just a joint flush last time, not a cartilage trim.

  • sounds about right, but warn them in advance just in case you have post op problems

  • Which one, the hospital or the interviewers?

I've let the interviewers know already!

  • the interviewers

if you are in pain and having to walk around it may not be a great aid to an interview

if you are heavily medicated it could be like the job interview in trainspotting

  • From personal experience, arthroscopies don't really hurt that much, I had one a few years ago and I wasn't in any pain whatsoever... bit of a pain having to hobble round, but apart from that, nada!

  • Had it done this morning and am up and about, but I am pumped up with synthetic morphine! Cartilage trim and fixed a complex tear. Feck knows how I managed to make such a mess of that!

  • Day 2 and I've not needed any painkillers today, just been taking anti-inflammatories. Still up and about. I've been icing it every couple of hours with an Aircast Cryo Cuff. I can really recommend it.

  • I have to get an mri for my right knee as I've been feeling pain and constant discomfort from walking, standing, and it has been affecting me while riding. A few months ago, my right leg fell into an uncovered sidewalk storm drain in my town. I was thigh deep in the hole and my parents took me to the emergency room. I suffered a contusion and scrapes around the knee. I saw my orthopedic doctor/knee surgeon today and he didn't like how my knee was tracking. I'm worried as I've never had problems with my right side ever, and my left knee is pretty battered from many surgeries. I should look into paying a lawyer a visit about the incident. A police report was made the day of the accident, and I have paperwork to back it up. So much for riding this summer.

  • My knees have improved a shed load since I actually went to see a good specialist who referred me to a brilliant physio. I burnt my pockets but have been on a initially fast but constantly slowing path to recovery.

I was warned by both the physio and specialist that I will never be able to just be 'normal'. I'd always have to stretch more and do certain constant strengthening exercises. I neglect that sometimes now and what starts as minor discomfort quickly turns into crippling pain if I don't do something about it for a while.

What I found fascinating over the past 2 and a half years since I first started having knee problems was firstly how I took the smallest things for granted and secondly how closely related my happiness is to my physical well being.

  • I've been prescribed a knee brace for patellar maltracking and physical therapy sessions

  • Just managed to give myself patella tendonitis from one race. Knee felt slightly different after practice lap - barely noticable but stretched quads just in case.
Was slightly overgeared so some high power/low cadence on a couple of climbs each lap. Pain at top of right knee in the car and next day can't climb stairs or ride for knee tendon pain.
No big jump in volume or changes in bike fit and not much on intensity. Bike fit has been fine for 2 years of much longer riding. Think it's a musculature issue (glute was strained on the same side) and that I'll be needing to stretch all ( which I already do) and build my VMO, glutes and IBS.

Whatever looks like racing is over for 2016. 350hrs of training down the toilet.

  • best bet right now is rest ice compression elevation and possibly some NSAID (eg ibuprofen)

once the inflamation has subsided then use a roller for it band and quads and then do some knee stabilisation exercises (eg yoga warrior poses, utkatasana etc) paying strict attention to the knee alignment and tracking when moving the knee. you can also use a wobble cushion or board to further enhance knee control and proprioception

  • No remedial 12hr racing?

  • oh, plenty of that too!

if you treat it well now it may abate pretty quickly
