Even though I'm after the work of a specific artist is it faux pas to show them photos of other people's stuff as a rough starting point? Obviously I would refer to their own artwork if they had what I was looking for but they don't.
Not a faux pas, but I would make sure it's similar to a style they do. It may help if you can show them a picture of something similar they have done themselves.
good reference is always helpful, every artist uses reference to work out their drawings. most reference you bring should be not tattoo related, if tattoo related than use it to show what style you like.
