Anyone know anything about disc brakes?

  • Spyre C are OEM only, which is why none of the other shops stock them

Thanks! That didn't appear in their website, I've emailed directly to TRP hoping for the best.

  • For my fixed gear I am looking for a new front brake, hydraulic disc, to fit on a drop bar.
Is there any alternative to buying a full hylex kit and detaching the rear brake hose at the lever?

I'd like two levers, one caliper. Only one lever has to do the action, the other would be for symmetry and hand positions.

  • Bit extreme but yes, you can do that.

  • If you have levers then you could get a hy/rd. Otherwise I'd try and find a secondhand broken hylex lever then get a working one for the other hand and the brake.

  • Yeah I have levers, but I'd rather have full hydraulic.
    Hy/Rd is an option though.
The new Shimano stuff is all STIs?

  • Just picked up some Spyres - which compressionless cable would people recommend?

  • What's your setup? Road or MTB levers? Jagwire outer with Goodridge inners for road levers. For MTB levers, just look for Stolen linear brake cable on eBay. Both options comes with PTFE lined outer and inners, a squirt of GT85 before installation and you'll be on the way!

  • Whatevs, I grabbed a length of BMX stuff a while back as it was cheap, worked fine, or I've fitted the jagwire stuff for work, worked fine.

  • Is the Jagwire or other decent compressionless outer available by the metre? I've only ever seen it as part of a set. I know the Goodridge variant can be purchased by the metre but I've been led to believe it's really inflexible.

  • Ditto to HY/RD-C too.

  • I actually been researching for a while but still show two best option;

Yokozuna Reaction being the number one, while jagwire coming a close second.

  • Bb7 road, jagwire compression less and those Cane Creek SCR-5/Tektro levers.

    Best value for best performance.

  • Best value for best performance.

  • Linear cable and outer have been part of the BMX scene for ages and they are cheap as chips. Give them a shot and tell me there's noticeable difference with your examples. They're very stiff and it's what I've run for polo for the past 4 years without a kink in the outer. Both v brakes and cable disc mind.

  • Compressionless outers are usually quite stiff and that's why they offer much better performance over regular coil outers.

I've used Goodridge they're fine but I prefer either BMX outer or Jagwire as they are easily available.

If you're in London, pop by Condor cycles, they have a reel of Jagwire and will cut it to order.

  • I wouldn't say it's the stiffness that offers better performance, it's a side effect of making them not compress. But yeah, BMX stuff works as well on the cheap, jagwire is kevlar so probably works the same but is lighter.

  • I think I still have 4 sets of BNIB BMX cable and outer in the spare box. Bought 5 sets only needed 1 as I replaced the inner and used the leftovers when I switched from V to disc.

More than anything else, PTFE lined outer and coated inner is smooth as!

  • I have run a BB7 with compressionless when I had Bullhorns and a disc fork on my cross-check (don't ask...)

Stopping power was great, though it was a constant faff to set it up correctly and it squealed like hell in almost every situation.

On the current bike I run the cheapest Deore flatbar hydraulic disc and it has been there for 1,5 years, doesn't squeal, has decent stopping power and has been adjusted exactly once, when installed.

Something similarly simple would be great.

  • HY/RD then, the hydraulic self aligning pads reduced squealing.

Note; replace stock pads with Shimano's own for longevity and predictable power.

  • I have a quick disc-related question, if anyone can help?

    Can anyone recommend some replacement disc forks, that have a similar axle-to-crown distance as a track fork? Most CX/tourer forks have masses of extra height for mudguard/panniers that I just don't need and I don't want to end up riding like this;

At the moment I have a Pista fork which is 375mm, whereas most other forks start at 400mm. The only ones I can find are Surly Disc Trucker 650c's, but my frame has a 44mm wide headtube, so Surlys might look a little out of place, considering their narrower profile (this is just an aesthetic thing, I know they're solid forks).

    Thanks for any help.

  • Enve RD, Kinesis tracer, TRP, Aliexpress

  • Cheers guys, will investigate all.

  • There is the aliexpress/ebay one:

    370mm axle-to-crown , 40mm rake
Fits a ~25mm tire and quality control is a bit shit but cheap!

There are loads of sellers for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bike-Carbon-Fiber-Fixed-Gear-Front-Fork-for-V-Disc-brake-28-6mm-700C-1-1-8-TY-/141731092565

The top is 50mm wide (if you are into aesthetics...)

    23mm tire on 24mm rim

  • They look perfect, thank you.
