lumpy 110km ride out on the supersix today - brilliant bike, absolutely cracking.

I also saw someone riding a CAAD5 Saeco Aero at the Severn Bridge Road Race today, awesome to see someone still thrashing it.

I have ridden up it before, using 34/27. It was hell.

When I was quite new to cycling I rode Ventoux on a 39/23. It was quite unpleasant.
39/36 would be like walking up it, surely.

Or 34/32 for similar GI.

@MechaMorgan if you can't ride up the Zoncolan in 39/36, you can't ride up it at all.
Even the pro go for a big range, like Brent Bookwalter who reportedly fitted a 11-36 combined to a 53/36 chainset during the Giro d’Italia.

The only cassette that will go on an XD driver is a 10-42, so this is all a little academic for now, I am going to go for 1x11 on this, the only decision is front chainring size.

46/42 give you a tidy 28GI with 25mm tyres, nearly identical to 34/32, and 46/10 is the nearly the same as 50/11 (a gnat higher on the 46t).
Obviously the bigger the tyres, the higher the GI get.

the only decision is front chainring size.
50t for the photos and 34t for the actual climb.

Forum consensus on which narrow/wide front ring to use would be the Wolfstooth/something else?

• #4216
Raceface might be cheaper

They don't appear to do a 110 bcd option.

Needs 10deg stem too

Ah, hang on, looking in the wrong place on their site.

I've got at least one 130bcd hollowgram spider

I think I might get two front rings (hey - why not mount them side by side?) and swap between them depending on what I'm doing.
i.e. a 50T for the UK (and the photographs) and a 44T for Zoncolan.
The 44T would give a 28.3" bottom gear, the 50T 32.15".
Top end would be 118.8 and 135 respectively.

About to start building up my CAAD10. Any suggestions for black cable adjusters?
-
• #4223
What tyres sizes are you running the calculation on? 30mm?
-
• #4224
32mm as they measure 31 fresh on the rim, and I expect they'll stretch a little.

Sunrace soon offering non-XD wide range 11sp road cassettes in 11-40t (392g) and 11-42t (404g). That's similar weight as XG-1150 (Rival1) and I'm guessing a shit tonne cheaper...

Anyone know of a decent place to purchase DT Swiss end caps that's not in the USA?
